Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, is poised for a momentous celebration as it prepares to graduate 8,157 students at its 19th convocation ceremony. The highly anticipated event, scheduled to commence on March 25, 2025, will not only mark the academic achievements of thousands but also recognize distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to society.
Speaking at a press briefing, the acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ikechebelu, expressed the university’s excitement over the upcoming event. He emphasized that the convocation represents the institution’s unwavering commitment to academic excellence and national development. “This convocation is a testament to our pursuit of excellence. Our graduates are not just leaving with degrees; they are stepping into the world as refined, intellectually sound individuals ready to make an impact,” Ikechebelu stated.
A highlight of the ceremony will be the conferment of honorary degrees on three prominent figures. Among those to be honored are the Minister of Health, Dr. Ali Pate; renowned industrialist, Chief Chika Emenike; and Oluwaseyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu. Their selection, according to the university, is based on their exemplary contributions to the advancement of society and their support for educational initiatives.
Seyi Tinubu’s recognition has particularly drawn attention, with many lauding his philanthropic efforts, youth empowerment initiatives, and business acumen. His role in supporting entrepreneurship and education in Nigeria has been widely acknowledged, making him a fitting recipient of this honor. Likewise, Chief Chika Emenike has been instrumental in Nigeria’s industrial growth, while Dr. Ali Pate’s influence in public health policy and medical advancements has left an indelible mark on the nation.
With security being a major concern at large gatherings, Professor Ikechebelu assured attendees that all necessary measures had been put in place to ensure a hitch-free convocation. He emphasized that the university, in collaboration with security agencies, has developed a comprehensive security framework to guarantee the safety of students, guests, and staff throughout the ceremony.
Beyond academic excellence, UNIZIK has witnessed remarkable infrastructural improvements in recent years. The vice-chancellor highlighted ongoing digitalization projects that have enhanced administrative efficiency and reduced bureaucratic bottlenecks. “We are not just producing graduates; we are fostering a culture of innovation and excellence. Our digital transformation has positioned us as one of the leading universities in Nigeria,” he added.
The institution has also tackled challenges related to power supply, with significant investments made to ensure uninterrupted electricity. According to Ikechebelu, UNIZIK’s electricity bill ranges between N80 million and N100 million monthly due to its classification under Band A. However, strategic partnerships and internal cost-cutting measures have enabled the school to maintain steady power supply while reducing financial strain.
UNIZIK, originally a state university before its federal status was conferred, has undergone tremendous evolution over the years. From overcoming financial hurdles to maintaining a focus on academic and infrastructural development, the university continues to assert itself as a top-tier educational institution in Nigeria. “We have created an environment where both staff and students thrive. Our focus remains on productivity, and this has significantly changed the mindset of our university community,” Ikechebelu noted.
As the convocation draws near, the atmosphere at UNIZIK is one of anticipation and pride. For the 8,157 graduates, the ceremony marks the beginning of a new chapter filled with promise and opportunity.
