A wave of grief and renewed concern over insecurity has gripped the Federal University Lokoja community following the discovery of a female final-year student, identified as Sarah Idoko, whose lifeless body was found along the Lokoja–Abuja Highway.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday night around the Crusher area along the Felele axis of Lokoja, has once again drawn attention to the growing safety risks faced by students and residents in the area, a corridor already notorious for recurring security threats.
According to eyewitness accounts, a vehicle was seen stopping briefly at the location around 8 p.m. before speeding off. Shortly after, passers-by discovered the body by the roadside and immediately alerted security operatives.
Initial confusion surrounded the identity of the deceased after a student identity card recovered at the scene suggested she was enrolled at the Kogi State Polytechnic. However, the Kogi State Police Command later clarified that the victim was indeed a final-year student of the Federal University Lokoja.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Kankarofi, said investigations had commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding her death and to track down those responsible for the killing.
He assured residents that the police were committed to ensuring justice, adding that the outcome of the investigation would be made public once findings are concluded.
The tragic incident has triggered outrage among student groups, particularly the Association of Nigeria Female Students (ANFS), Kogi State Chapter, which condemned the killing as cruel, unacceptable, and a disturbing reminder of the vulnerability of students in the state.
The association called on security agencies to intensify investigations and urged authorities to strengthen security presence around campuses, student hostels, and major transit routes such as the Felele corridor, which has witnessed multiple violent incidents in recent years.
For many students of the Federal University Lokoja, the latest killing has deepened fears over commuting and daily movement along the highway, which serves as a major access route linking communities within and outside the state capital.
Residents and stakeholders have continued to express concern that the persistent insecurity along the Lokoja–Abuja Highway is undermining academic life and creating an atmosphere of fear within the university community.
As investigations continue, calls are growing for urgent and coordinated security interventions to protect students and commuters, and to prevent further loss of lives in what many now describe as a dangerously exposed academic environment.
The death of Sarah Idoko adds to a troubling pattern of violent incidents in the region, intensifying demands for stronger policing, improved surveillance, and long-term solutions to insecurity affecting educational communities.
