Delivering his welcome address, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Prof. Joseph Babatola Ayodele, praised the resilience and determination of the graduating students. “This convocation is not just about numbers; it is a reflection of hard work, perseverance, and the university’s unwavering commitment to excellence. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Akin Oyebode, emphasized the significance of this achievement, urging the graduates to embrace the challenges ahead. “The world outside the university is vastly different. Adaptability, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of success will be your greatest assets. Go forth and make EKSU proud,” he advised.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the announcement of the best graduating student, Falowo Emmanuel Oyindamola, from the Faculty of Engineering. Oyindamola, who studied Electrical Engineering, emerged with an outstanding CGPA of 4.89, an achievement that drew admiration from the academic community. “This is a testament to the power of discipline, focus, and determination,” he said, while dedicating his success to his lecturers and his Father, Dr. Falowo.
Beyond academic achievements, EKSU’s growing reputation was further solidified as the institution secured the 12th position among Nigeria’s 275 universities. The university also received a significant financial boost under the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji, who increased EKSU’s monthly subvention from ₦260 million to ₦410 million, ensuring that staff salaries are fully paid. “Education remains a top priority for this administration, and EKSU’s progress is proof that investment in knowledge yields immense returns,” the governor noted.
In line with its commitment to innovation, EKSU announced the introduction of five new undergraduate programs, including Public Administration, Criminology, Social Work, Intelligence and Social Security Studies, and Mass Communication. The Doctor of Pharmacy program was also formally unveiled, thanks to the immense support of Prince Julius Adeluyi, who played a critical role in securing accreditation. “This program will not only enhance our academic portfolio but also provide Nigeria with well-trained pharmacists capable of transforming the healthcare sector,” the Vice-Chancellor added.
Further demonstrating its drive for academic excellence, EKSU revealed that 86 of its 96 programs have full accreditation, while three are on interim status, and seven are in the process of accreditation. Additionally, the university announced the promotion of six professors, five readers, and 40 other faculty members, a move aimed at strengthening its academic workforce. “A great university thrives on the strength of its faculty. We will continue to empower our lecturers to deliver world-class education,” said the Dean of Faculty Affairs.
Infrastructure development also took centre stage, with Senator Opeyemi Bamidele funding the construction of a radio station on campus, aimed at enhancing the university’s communication and media programs. Similarly, Prof. Kunle Ajayi constructed a moot court for the Law Faculty, providing students with a real-life legal practice environment. “Modern education requires modern facilities. These projects will elevate the learning experience and set our students on the path to professional excellence,” the Vice-Chancellor remarked.
Tomorrow ceremony which is the second day will also serve as a platform to honour distinguished Nigerians, with Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, Dr. Zach Adedeji, and a yet-to-be-announced recipient set to receive honorary degrees in recognition of their contributions to national development. “The value of education goes beyond classrooms; it extends to leadership, service, and impact. These honourees exemplify what it means to be agents of progress,” noted the university’s Public Relations Officer.
As the convocation came to a close, emotions ran high among graduates and their families. Parents beamed with pride as they watched their children celebrate years of hard work and sacrifice. “It hasn’t been easy, but today, all the struggles have paid off,” said Mrs Akintude, a parent of one of the graduates. For the graduates, the day marked the beginning of a new journey. “EKSU has shaped us, and now, it’s time to shape the world,” a graduate of the department of History and International Studies, Author Seyi, declared.
