Located at 3, Zulu Gambari, GRA Road, Ilorin, the Kwara State Library Board stands as a symbol of knowledge, public learning, and community development in the state. During a recent visit, The Nigeria Education News team embarked on a floor-by-floor tour of the facility, documenting each section of this vital academic and cultural resource.
Upon arrival, visitors are welcomed at the Reception Section on the First Floor, which serves as the library’s gateway. Staff members here provide direction and basic information to help new users navigate the various units of the library.
Adjacent to the reception area is the Desk Section, designated for visitors to securely deposit their personal belongings before entering the main reading or research areas. This helps maintain a quiet and distraction-free environment for all users.
The ID Card Collection Office, also on the first floor, is where first-time visitors are required to pay a fee of #1,000 to register and obtain a library ID card. This ID grants access to the various specialized sections of the facility.
Heading upstairs to the second floor, one encounters the expansive Reference and Reading Hall Section, a quiet zone equipped with rows of desks and chairs, where students, researchers, and readers of all ages can engage in undisturbed study and academic work.
Back on the first floor, the library accommodates inclusivity through a Deaf and Disabled Section Room, designed to cater to physically challenged users. This facility ensures that all members of the community, regardless of physical ability, can access information and educational resources.
Also located on the first floor is the Humanities Section, which houses books and resources on subjects such as literature, history, philosophy, and languages. Adjacent to this is the Children’s Library Section, a colorful and inviting space furnished with age-appropriate reading materials and creative learning resources.
On the second floor lies the Science and Technology Section, stocked with journals, textbooks, and research materials in areas such as physics, chemistry, engineering, and applied sciences. Close to it is the Social Sciences Section, which covers disciplines like sociology, political science, economics, and psychology.
The Computer Room Section on the second floor allows users to access electronic resources; however, patrons must come along with their personal laptops as desktop computers are not provided for public use at the time of this report.
For visitors who need document reproduction services, the Printing and Photocopy Section, located on the first floor, is operational and provides support for students and researchers needing hard copies of documents or materials.
A unique addition to the library’s offerings is the Fritmags Consult Section, also on the first floor. Though little known, this consulting unit provides services related to training, consultancy, and digital literacy.
The building is structured to support administrative and managerial functions on the Third Floor, where the offices of the Director, Board Chairman, and other key library administrators are located. Other offices housed here include those of the accountant, revenue team, and technical services heads.
Supporting both staff and users are various Study Carrel Sections (I-IV), distributed across different floors to provide isolated cubicles for individual study, especially for scholars who need minimal disturbance.
The NOD-e-Library Unit on the second floor plays a vital role in digital learning, offering access to an array of electronic books, journals, and online databases. This unit is central to the library’s modernization drive.
A Multipurpose Hall within the library complex is used for lectures, seminars, and training workshops. This space underscores the library’s function beyond reading, serving as a community learning center.
The Audio Visual, Classification, Acquisition, and Cataloguing Sections, though typically closed to the public, are instrumental in processing and organizing all library resources before they are shelved or archived.
Supporting infrastructure like the Bindery and Store are located in the basement, contributing to the library’s ability to repair, store, and maintain reading materials.
Perhaps one of the most impressive features of the Kwara State Library is its 24/7 Power Supply, ensuring uninterrupted reading and research experience for users during both day and evening hours.
As the state continues to promote education and literacy, the Kwara State Library stands as a beacon of opportunity. While the facility has several strengths, stakeholders believe continued investment and innovation will ensure it remains relevant in the digital age and accessible to all citizens.
