Taraba State continues to battle entrenched educational challenges despite hosting a number of tertiary institutions and recent reforms aimed at improving access and quality of learning. Key indicators reveal gaps in literacy, school attendance, infrastructure, and overall education outcomes.
According to king maker education data, Taraba ranked 26th nationally in adult literacy, with a literacy rate of 52.5% as of 2018. The state also ranked 24th in educational attainment, with 35.2% of the population having no formal education or failing to complete primary school. Primary school attendance was at 62.3%, while secondary school attendance trailed behind at 40.6%, placing Taraba 27th nationally for school attendance.
In terms of education quality, **only 42.8% of candidates passed the 2018 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), further highlighting systemic challenges in the delivery of quality education.
These indicators reflect not only the socioeconomic realities of the state but also infrastructure deficits. A recent incident underscored this concern: an examination hall at Government Secondary School, Namnai in Gassol Local Government Area collapsed during WASSCE exams, endangering students and drawing renewed attention to the state of public school facilities.
Despite these challenges, the current administration has declared free education at the primary level, and teacher recruitment efforts are ongoing. However, persistent insecurity, especially in rural areas, continues to disrupt schooling, force school closures, and contribute to the rising number of out-of-school children. Teacher shortages especially in nomadic schools remain an issue, and while renovations are underway, many schools still face infrastructural deficits.
In terms of higher education, Taraba State is home to several tertiary institutions established over the last two decades:
Universities in Taraba State
Federal University, Wukari – established in 2011
Taraba State University, Jalingo – established in 2008
Kwararafa University, Wukari (private) – established in 2005

Taraba State College of Agriculture, Jalingo

Taraba State College of Nursing and Midwifery, Jalingo
Peacock College of Education, Jalingo
Muwanshat College of Health Science and Technology, Jalingo
College of Health Sciences and Technology, Mutum Biyu
Polytechnics
Federal Polytechnic, Bali
Taraba State Polytechnic, Suntai
These institutions form the backbone of the state’s post-secondary education structure, serving a growing youth population. According to demographic data, 88% of the state’s population is aged 15 years and below, while only 12% are adults aged 16 and above. The male population constitutes 57%, with females at 43%.
While the presence of universities, colleges, and polytechnics provides the foundation for educational development, many of these institutions still face operational and infrastructural hurdles. Sustained government investment, stronger regulation, and improved oversight are needed to ensure that these institutions meet the educational needs of the state’s population.
The task ahead, stakeholders say, is not only about expanding access but improving quality, safety, and outcomes for the next generation in Taraba State.
