The Faculty of Information and Communication Technology 1 has emerged winner of the 2026 Rector’s Cup Soccer Competition organised by Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, after a tournament marked by competitive football, discipline and teamwork.
The annual sporting competition, which featured students from different faculties of the institution, culminated in a grand finale that saw the ICT faculty claim the coveted trophy, while the Faculty of Engineering finished as runners-up and the Faculty of Management Studies secured third position.
Representing the Rector, Alhaji Kehinde Adeyemi Alabi, at the final was the Deputy Rector, Dr Gboyega Oluwaseun Oyeleke. The event was also attended by the institution’s Registrar and Pillar of Sports, Omo’ba Abiodun Oyedele Oloyede, alongside other senior officials.
Among those present were the Director of Works and Services, Engr. Waheed Bamgbade; Head of Library, Dr Folashade Babatunde; Director of Sports, Dr H.O. Efunwole; Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Engr. Ogunwemimo; and Dean, Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, Dr Akinrosoye, among other members of the institution’s management.
Addressing the players and students, the Deputy Rector commended participants for maintaining exemplary conduct throughout the competition. He said the institution would continue to support sporting activities and other initiatives capable of developing students beyond the classroom and promoting self-reliance.
The Registrar, Omo’ba Oloyede, also encouraged students to uphold discipline and responsible conduct both within and outside the campus. He noted that sporting talents, when properly developed and professionally managed, could provide viable career and livelihood opportunities for young people.
Earlier, the Director of Sports, Dr H.O. Efunwole, appreciated the management for its continued support for sports development in the institution. He pledged that the Directorate of Sports would continue working towards improving the standard of sporting activities at the polytechnic.
The tournament, according to the institution, demonstrated the capacity of its students to combine academic pursuits with sporting excellence while fostering unity and healthy competition across faculties.
At the end of the competition, the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology 1 took first place, followed by the Faculty of Engineering in second position and the Faculty of Management Studies in third.
The winning teams received medals and cash prizes, bringing the 2026 Rector’s Cup to a colourful conclusion and reinforcing Osun State Polytechnic’s commitment to student development through sports and extracurricular activities.
