The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), one of Nigeria’s most prestigious institutions, is set to host its 54th Convocation Ceremony from Tuesday, July 22 to Sunday, July 27, 2025. The university has released a detailed programme of events, highlighting a week of academic celebration, cultural displays, religious observances, and the formal award of degrees. Students, staff, alumni, and the general public have been invited to witness and participate in the celebration of academic excellence.
The week-long convocation activities will begin on Tuesday, July 22 with a Convocation Press Briefing to be held at the Main Hall of the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC) at exactly 12 noon. This briefing, to be addressed by the Vice-Chancellor and principal officers, will provide an overview of the convocation, expected dignitaries, and highlight the accomplishments of the graduating students.
On Wednesday, July 23, attention shifts to the Nsukka campus for a Convocation Exhibition at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, starting at 10:00 a.m. The exhibition is expected to showcase student innovations, faculty research, and community impact projects. Later in the day, a Sports Display will take place at Akanu Ibiam Stadium at 5:00 p.m., featuring inter-faculty competitions and exhibitions of athletic excellence, promoting the university’s commitment to total student development.
Thursday, July 24, will feature two landmark events. In the morning, the Convocation Lecture titled “Educated to Rise: From Local Struggles to Global Strength” will be delivered by Mr. Ukandu Eme Ukandu, Managing Director and CEO of FirstCap Limited. The session, which will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium, will be chaired by Chief (Dr.) Akintola Oladejo, MD/CEO of Prestigious Homes Ltd, Lagos. Later that day at 4:00 p.m., the Prize and Awards Ceremony will honour the best graduating students and exceptional achievers from various faculties.
On Friday, July 25, the university will formally confer First Degrees, Diplomas, and Certificates at Ekpo Convocation Hall, beginning at 10:00 a.m. This event is one of the most anticipated by graduating students and their families. In line with the university’s religious diversity, a Jumat Prayer will hold at the UNN Mosque in the afternoon, aligned with regular prayer time. The day will be rounded off with a Drama and Music Performance at 4:00 p.m. in the New Arts Theatre, celebrating the university’s rich cultural heritage.
The climax of academic activities will continue on Saturday, July 26, with the conferment of Postgraduate Diplomas and Higher Degrees, including Master’s and PhDs. The event will also hold at the Ekpo Convocation Hall, beginning promptly at 10:00 a.m. Distinguished scholars and researchers will be honoured for their academic pursuit and contributions to national development.
The convocation will come to a close on Sunday, July 27, with a Thanksgiving Mass at St. Peter’s Chaplaincy on campus. The service, scheduled for 10:00 a.m., will provide an opportunity for graduates, staff, and guests to express gratitude for the successful completion of the academic journey and to pray for future endeavours.
The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, in a statement made available through the school’s convocation committee, expressed pride in the graduating students, urging them to remain worthy ambassadors of UNN wherever they find themselves. “Our university remains committed to excellence, innovation, and service. As we release another generation of lions and lionesses into the world, we trust that they will uphold the values of truth and service in all they do.”
This 54th convocation marks a significant milestone for the institution and reaffirms UNN’s leadership in promoting academic excellence, research, and national transformation. With thousands of degrees to be conferred across various levels, the convocation reaffirms UNN’s stature as a center of learning and a beacon of hope for education in Africa.
Guests and alumni from across Nigeria and the diaspora are expected to attend the week-long event, which is anticipated to be both colourful and impactful. UNN has also announced that all events will be streamed live on the university’s digital platforms to accommodate families and well-wishers unable to travel to Nsukka.
