The former Governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has once again demonstrated his commitment to education and healthcare development with a direct intervention at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Dentistry Department in Enugu. Obi visited the department today to personally assess the condition of the faculty and pledged both immediate and long-term support to address its infrastructural and academic needs.
The Dentistry Department at UNN holds the unique distinction of being the only accredited dental surgery training center in the entire South East region of Nigeria. However, due to equipment limitations and inadequate facilities, the department is only allowed to graduate 15 dental surgeons per year. This has led to a severe shortage of dental professionals in the region, leaving over 60 million people in the South East underserved in dental healthcare.
Peter Obi, known for his hands-on approach, visited the faculty to conduct a firsthand evaluation. During the visit, he listened to the concerns of lecturers, students, and administrators who detailed the department’s struggle to maintain accreditation standards. The department has consistently faced challenges ranging from outdated equipment to inadequate clinical materials, resulting in limited student intake and poor service delivery capacity.
In response, Mr. Obi immediately donated N15 million to the department as a short-term intervention. Addressing the faculty members and students, he pledged to work towards raising N100 million in total, which he believes will reposition the Dentistry Department to meet global standards. This will include purchasing modern dental equipment, upgrading laboratories, and improving teaching infrastructure.
“This is not just about education but about healthcare and human capital development,” Obi said. “Fifteen dentists a year for a population of over 60 million people is unacceptable. We must act now to change this narrative.”
The former governor also assured the department that he would rally corporate organizations, philanthropists, and friends of education to contribute to the N100 million target. His goal is not only to sustain the current accreditation but also to help the department apply for expansion, enabling it to admit at least 60 students yearly as a starting point.
Obi’s intervention is expected to fast-track the process of scaling up dental education in the region. Increasing the number of dental graduates will have far-reaching implications for oral healthcare delivery, job creation, and medical tourism reduction, especially as many Nigerians currently travel abroad for advanced dental procedures.
Students of the department erupted in cheers during the visit, surrounding Mr. Obi and chanting, “Na our Papa be this ooo, and we no get another one, na our Papa be this ooo eh…” The chant reflected not just their gratitude but also their sense of belonging to a cause championed by a leader they believe genuinely cares about their future.
Lecturers at the department described the gesture as unprecedented. Speaking on behalf of the faculty, Dr. Chukwuma Ibe, a senior lecturer, said, “In all my years here, I’ve never seen this level of direct involvement from a national leader. Peter Obi’s action today will go down in history as a game-changer for dental education in the South East.”
Healthcare experts and education advocates have also applauded Obi’s commitment. Dr. Ifeoma Nwankwo, a public health analyst, emphasized that his gesture goes beyond philanthropy it highlights the urgent need for public-private partnerships in Nigerian healthcare education, especially in specialized fields like dentistry.
The University of Nigeria’s management expressed appreciation for the intervention, noting that the faculty had struggled for years to attract the kind of attention and funding that Obi has now mobilized. They assured the public that the funds will be properly utilized to upgrade facilities and improve learning outcomes.
Observers say this development may push other influential Nigerians and state governments in the region to prioritize healthcare education. If successful, the Dentistry Department’s expansion could serve as a model for similar initiatives across other fields of specialized medicine in the country.
This latest move by Peter Obi aligns with his broader philosophy of human capital development through education and healthcare investment. His record as Anambra State governor included building new schools, upgrading hospitals, and supporting tertiary institutions with direct funding.
The UNN Dentistry project is not just about academics it is about saving lives, Obi reiterated. He stressed that better training for dentists will translate into better oral health for millions, reducing cases of preventable dental diseases and complications.
Students and staff at the department are already optimistic. With the initial N15 million received and the promise of more support, the dream of turning the department into a centre of excellence for dental training and practice in Nigeria is becoming more tangible.
Obi concluded his visit by encouraging the students to remain focused and committed. “We are laying the foundation for a healthier, better educated, and more prosperous South East. Together, we will get there,” he said.
The Nigeria Education News will continue to monitor the progress of this intervention and provide updates as the UNN Dentistry Department moves towards achieving its expanded capacity goals.
