In an age where digital literacy defines economic relevance, Nigerian students studying computer science, software engineering, and other ICT-related courses are ironically still writing code with pens and solving practical exams on paper. This shocking disconnect between curriculum and reality reflects a deep-rooted flaw in the nation’s education system, which continues to prioritize theory over hands-on experience.
Across various polytechnics and universities in Nigeria, many students pursuing degrees in computer science or software engineering do so without ever using a functional laptop or desktop. These students are being trained in digital disciplines without access to digital tools. This paradox not only stifles innovation but also renders many graduates ill-equipped for the competitive global tech industry.
One anonymous graduate lamented, “Throughout my ND and HND years, I never used a laptop for school work. We were taught Java and Python, but we wrote everything on paper. Now I’m waiting for NYSC, with no real experience.” This student is not alone. Thousands of others have graduated with impressive GPAs, yet have never compiled a single program or executed a digital project outside the classroom.
The issue extends beyond lack of infrastructure. The teaching methodology in many Nigerian tertiary institutions emphasizes memorization and regurgitation of code rather than practical application. Exams that are supposed to be project-based are conducted in large halls with students scribbling pseudo-code on foolscap sheets. It’s no wonder why Nigeria produces “paper engineers” who cannot debug a basic program, let alone build functional software.
The absurdity is more evident in departments of mechanical engineering, where students who graduate with first-class degrees are unable to perform basic mechanical tasks, such as replacing a spark plug in a generator. Their training, though rigorous in theory, lacks practical exposure. This is a disturbing reflection of a larger problem: an education system that rewards rote learning over problem-solving.
This imbalance was humorously highlighted by a trending social media comment: “I pity people studying software engineering in this country. Imagine doing a programming exam with pen and paper. Who does that?” While amusing, the sentiment reflects a painful reality that is robbing Nigerian students of global competitiveness.
The Federal Ministry of Education has repeatedly pledged to improve ICT infrastructure in schools. However, tangible change is yet to be seen. Budget allocations to education remain low, and funds that do exist are often mismanaged or poorly distributed. As a result, many departments remain under-equipped and understaffed.
Lecturers themselves are often not sufficiently trained in the use of modern educational technologies. Some rely on outdated curricula that do not align with current industry trends. Even when new technologies are introduced, they are rarely maintained or integrated into a coherent teaching strategy.
This disconnection between what is taught and what is practiced creates a generation of graduates who are only theoretically prepared. Many of them become unemployable, as companies now require hands-on skills, critical thinking, and real-world problem-solving abilities traits rarely developed in lecture halls.
Furthermore, the high cost of laptops and the lack of subsidized digital tools mean that many students cannot afford the basic equipment they need. Unlike students in other countries who receive government-sponsored tablets or laptops, Nigerian students are largely left to fend for themselves.
Vocational training and digital skills development programs remain grossly underdeveloped. This affects not just students but the nation’s long-term goals in building a digital economy. With an ever-growing youth population, Nigeria has the potential to become a global tech hub if only the educational system aligns with modern realities.
There are, however, glimmers of hope. Initiatives like the NELFUND student loan scheme and tech bootcamps from private organizations are beginning to bridge the gap. Some institutions are gradually adopting blended learning and online coding platforms, but these are still the exception, not the norm.
The government must treat this issue as an emergency. A dedicated policy to digitize ICT-related education, provide free or subsidized hardware, and train instructors in emerging tech tools is urgently needed. Without this, the country risks producing millions of graduates who are digitally illiterate in a digital age.
More collaboration with the private sector is also essential. Tech firms should be incentivized to provide internships, mentorship, and hardware to students. Public-private partnerships could significantly improve infrastructure in public universities and polytechnics.
At the core of it all is a mindset shift. Nigerian education must move from passive knowledge acquisition to active learning and innovation. Students must be taught not just to remember, but to think, create, and solve problems. Only then can Nigeria compete in the global knowledge economy.
Until then, we will continue to produce computer science graduates who have never compiled a program, software engineers who have never written real code, and mechanical engineers who cannot fix a broken fan. The time for reform is now.
