On Monday, August 18, 2025, Bayero University, Kano (BUK) witnessed a significant leadership transition as Professor Haruna Musa was formally inaugurated as the 12th Vice-Chancellor, succeeding Professor Sagir Adamu Abbas.
The handover ceremony, attended by members of the university community and key stakeholders, marked the beginning of a new era for the institution.
A Vision for the Future
In his inaugural address, Professor Musa outlined his mission to transform BUK into a world-class institution. He introduced his leadership philosophy, the “Quadruple I Motto,” which stands for Integrity, Inclusion, Innovation, and Impact.
“Our mission is to transform BUK into a world-class institution through visionary leadership, innovative funding, and effective stakeholder engagement,” Professor Musa stated. He also paid tribute to his predecessor, acknowledging Professor Abbas’s “indelible footprints” and inspiring tenure.
Reflecting on a Legacy
The outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abbas, presented his handover notes and congratulated Professor Musa on his appointment, calling his emergence a testament to a transparent and seamless process. Professor Abbas highlighted key achievements of his administration, which he said navigated a turbulent period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and prolonged industrial actions.
Among the notable successes were BUK’s ranking as the best Nigerian university for international visibility and fourth overall in the country. He also noted that his team successfully implemented 98% of the university’s 2020–2025 Strategic Plan, covering academic development, research, and infrastructure. Professor Abbas also highlighted the resolution of a decades-long land dispute with the Rimin Zakara community and the introduction of various welfare initiatives for staff and students. He appealed to the new Vice-Chancellor to continue these initiatives.
Call for Unity and Progress
The university’s Registrar, Malam Haruna Aliyu, described the event as a symbolic transfer of leadership and urged the entire BUK community to support the new Vice-Chancellor to ensure continuity and progress. The ceremony concluded with a standing ovation for Professor Musa as he officially took the helm of the institution.
