The Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, has expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of staff residential quarters, describing the situation as unacceptable for the university community.
Prof. Ahmed made the observation during an inspection tour of the institution’s staff quarters on Saturday, covering Silver Quarters, Quarter II, and Quarter III. The visit, which began at 8 a.m., marked the first time in years that a serving vice-chancellor personally assessed the state of the facilities.
Silver Quarters houses 200 staff residences, Quarter II has 144, while Quarter III contains 147. Across all three areas, residents highlighted challenges such as leaking roofs, acute water shortages, dilapidated roads, broken toilet facilities, and poor security.
At Silver Quarters, it was recommended that two industrial boreholes be drilled to address persistent water shortages. In Quarter II, where toilet facilities were in particularly bad shape, the Vice-Chancellor directed the Physical Planning and Municipal Services (PPMS) to carry out immediate assessments for urgent intervention.
Prof. Ahmed instructed the PPMS to compile all complaints and prepare a comprehensive report for action, assuring residents that the university management would prioritize their welfare.
Residents, who described the visit as “the first of its kind,” expressed gratitude for the Vice-Chancellor’s concern and pledged their support for his administration.
The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied by the Director of PPMS, Arc. Suleiman Mohammed; Director of Public Affairs, Malam Auwalu Umar; Head of Bulk Metering Unit, Engr. Ahmed Rufai Abubakar; and Head of University Water Section, Engr. Hussaini Ismail.
