The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Maiduguri, Professor Mohammed Laminu Mele, has commended the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for its commitment to staff welfare, particularly its efforts in renovating and constructing the perimeter wall of the union’s Secretariat.
The commendation was delivered on his behalf by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services), Professor Mohammed Ahmed Waziri, during a courtesy visit by the ASUU National President, Professor Christopher Piwuna, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Professor Piwuna, in his remarks, praised the University of Maiduguri ASUU Branch Chairperson, Dr. Abubakar Saidu Mshelia, for his dedication to the welfare of members. He highlighted the importance of collective action in advancing the interests of academic staff across Nigerian universities and described the UNIMAID branch as a model of effective leadership and member engagement.
In his welcome address, Dr. Abubakar Saidu expressed appreciation to the National President for the visit despite his busy schedule. He reaffirmed the branch’s commitment to safeguarding members’ welfare by advocating improved working conditions, enhanced health benefits, and staff well-being.
The visit was capped with the commissioning of the Secretariat’s perimeter wall and the formal dedication of its renovation, which ASUU leaders described as a symbol of the union’s resilience and dedication to its members.
