In a bid to address the shortage of qualified Mathematics teachers and consolidate recent gains in the education sector, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the recruitment of additional Mathematics teachers for deployment across secondary schools in the state.
The Commissioner for Education, Dr Aliyu Yusuf Makoda, announced this on Wednesday during the distribution of admission letters to newly admitted SS1 students at Maryam Aloma Girls’ Secondary School in Kano.
Dr Makoda explained that the move is part of the administration’s broader reforms aimed at revamping education through the provision of free and quality schooling, renovation of infrastructure, and greater community engagement.
“This administration is committed to repositioning education. The approval for the recruitment of new Mathematics teachers is a strategic response to the critical shortage affecting learning outcomes in our secondary schools,” he said.
Highlighting the state’s recent academic achievement, the commissioner noted that Kano emerged as the top performing state in the 2025 NECO examinations, a first in the state’s history. He attributed the success to Governor Yusuf’s strong commitment to the education sector.
“The governor is working tirelessly to strengthen the foundations of education in Kano. The result we’ve achieved in NECO is not by accident but through deliberate policy choices and interventions,” Makoda added.
He urged parents to support the government’s efforts by ensuring that their children are enrolled in school, stressing that education remains the best investment for the future.
Also speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of the Kano State Senior Secondary Schools Management Board, Rabi’u Gwarzo, said Kano had never ranked first in the NECO exams until the current administration came on board. He credited the achievement to the governor’s sustained focus on raising academic standards.
Gwarzo called for stronger collaboration among the State Universal Basic Education Board, the Senior Secondary Schools Management Board, and the Department of Educational Resources to maintain the progress.
In separate remarks, the Chairman of the Parent Teacher Association, Dahiru Salisu, and the State Chairman of the School Based Management Committee, Tijjani Baraya, commended the government’s efforts and urged parents, civil society groups, and stakeholders to continue supporting the ongoing reforms.
The event was attended by zonal directors, senior officials from the Ministry of Education, the Senior Secondary Schools Management Board, and the State Universal Basic Education Board.
