The Vice-Chancellor of Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Professor Shaykh-Luqman Jimoh, has called on African governments, civil society, academia, and the private sector to unite with a shared vision of building a brighter future where African innovation drives global progress.
Professor Jimoh made the call on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, while delivering his address at the opening ceremony of the 9th U6+ International Conference held at the University of The Gambia.
Speaking on the conference theme, “Celebrating Achievements, Addressing Challenges, and Envisioning Brighter Futures for Africa,” the vice-chancellor said access to quality education, robust health systems, and stable economies built on knowledge, technology, and sustainable industries were critical to Africa’s transformation.
“Over the past decades, we have seen extraordinary progress across Africa. Nations have invested significantly in education, empowering a new generation of thinkers and innovators,” Jimoh noted. “Our entrepreneurs and scientists are developing solutions not just for Africa but for the entire world, leading advances in technology, agriculture, and renewable energy.”
He praised Africa’s cultural influence, saying its artists and ambassadors have reshaped global perceptions of the continent as one rich with ideas, vision, and inspiration.
However, Professor Jimoh warned that significant challenges persist, including poverty, inequality, inadequate infrastructure, climate change, and political instability. He stressed the need to create opportunities for Africa’s youth, who make up the majority of the population, while also addressing corruption, strengthening governance, and ensuring transparent management of resources.
“We must also embrace the African diaspora as partners in progress, and most importantly, the voices of our youth must be placed at the centre of decision-making,” he added.
The 9th U6+ International Conference, which brings together delegates from member universities of the consortium, is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
