A devastating accident along Moshood Street in Ikere Ekiti last week claimed the lives of two students of Bamidele Olumilua University and left two others in critical condition. The incident has thrown the university community and the host town into mourning.
Eyewitnesses recounted that the accident occurred late at night when a GLK Benz carrying four students lost control and rammed into a building. The vehicle, which was reportedly speeding, had just returned from a party before tragedy struck. The impact left the car mangled and debris scattered across the road.
Findings revealed that the two students who sat at the back of the vehicle died instantly. One of them sustained fatal head injuries, while the other suffered severe internal bleeding. Their remains were later moved to a nearby morgue.
The two front-seat occupants were rushed to the hospital by passersby. As at the time of filing this report, the duo remain in a coma, with medical teams battling to stabilize them. Doctors confirmed their conditions to be critical.

Residents told The Nigeria Education News that the sound of the collision shook the neighborhood, drawing people out of their homes. Witnesses described the sight as horrifying, with shattered glass, twisted metals, and cries of pain filling the scene.
One resident who preferred anonymity said: “The car was moving too fast. The way it hit the building showed there was no control. This is a very sad incident, and we pray the survivors recover.” Another resident noted that while accidents are not uncommon in the town, none in recent memory had been this severe.
It was further gathered that the students had attended a night party in the town. Though details remain sketchy, residents emphasized that the timing and recklessness of the trip contributed to the tragedy.
Security operatives arrived shortly after the crash to manage the situation. They assisted in clearing the wreckage and towing the damaged vehicle, while sympathizers comforted those affected.
Meanwhile, the university authorities have been informed, and condolence messages are already pouring in for the families of the deceased. Although the management is yet to issue a formal statement, insiders revealed that counseling may be provided for traumatized students.
The Nigeria Education News also found that the accident has triggered conversations among students about road safety. Many of them described the tragedy as needless and preventable, urging their peers to take driving rules seriously.
Parents within the community also lamented the incident. Some warned against the carefree attitude of young drivers who underestimate the dangers of over-speeding, particularly after social gatherings.
Community leaders in Ikere Ekiti added their voices, stressing that the loss of promising youths was not just a tragedy for their families but also for the entire town. They appealed to young people to value caution above excitement, especially as the festive period draws near.
For now, families, students, and residents remain grief-stricken as investigations continue. The wreck on Moshood Street stands as a grim reminder of the dangers of reckless driving and the urgent need for road discipline.
