The Federal University Lokoja (FUL) has recorded its first harvest of cucumbers from the institution’s Screen House Farm, a joint initiative of the Faculty of Agriculture and the Kogi Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project.
The event, held ahead of the university’s 9th Convocation Ceremony, was attended by dignitaries, government officials, and members of the academic community, marking a milestone in FUL’s efforts to promote climate-smart agriculture and hands-on learning.
Representing the Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, the Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Matters, Hon. Engr. Olusegun Joseph, led the state delegation alongside the Kogi ACReSAL Project Coordinator, Barrister Ladi Jatto, OON, whose support was credited as instrumental to the project’s success.
In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, commended Governor Ododo for his administration’s commitment to agricultural development and environmental resilience across the state. He also appreciated the ACReSAL team for strengthening partnerships that have benefited the university, including the distribution of improved seedlings and the planting of over 9,000 trees within the campus to combat erosion and promote afforestation.
“This harvest is symbolic and historic. It represents growth, resilience, and opportunity, a practical step in bridging the gap between theory and practice for our students through all-year-round vegetable farming,” the Vice-Chancellor said.
The Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Olufumola Alabi, described the development as a remarkable outcome of collaboration between the university and ACReSAL. She noted that the Screen House project stands as the first of its kind in any Nigerian tertiary institution, underscoring FUL’s growing leadership in agricultural innovation.
Professor Alabi reaffirmed the Faculty’s commitment to advancing research, innovation, and sustainable farming practices in line with global standards.
Speaking on behalf of the Governor, Hon. Engr. Joseph reiterated the state government’s determination to strengthen food security and environmental protection through partnerships with research and educational institutions.
He urged the university to sustain its commitment to innovation and sustainability, describing the initiative as a model for integrating education, environmental management, and economic development.
