The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa chapter, has joined the ongoing two-week nationwide warning strike declared by the union’s national leadership.
Chairman of the OAUSTECH branch, Dr. Oluwatoyin Ogunbamike, confirmed the development on Monday in Okitipupa during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
“Yes, we have joined the two-week nationwide strike declared by the national body of ASUU,” he said. “We are obliged to comply with the directive in the collective interest of all members across the country.”
The strike, which commenced at midnight on Monday, October 13, is part of the union’s efforts to compel the Federal Government to address its long-standing demands.
ASUU National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, while addressing a press conference at the University of Abuja on Sunday, said the industrial action was approved at the union’s recent National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.
“The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive,” he said. “All ASUU branches in public universities are hereby directed to withdraw their services for an initial period of two weeks.”
However, academic activities at OAUSTECH are not expected to be immediately disrupted, as students are currently on vacation and yet to resume for the 2025/2026 academic session.
ASUU has repeatedly accused the Federal Government of reneging on several agreements, including those related to improved funding for universities, staff welfare, and institutional autonomy.
