The Senate Minority Leader and Senator representing Benue South Senatorial District, Comrade Abba Moro (PhD), has sponsored a bill seeking the establishment of a teaching hospital for the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo (FUHSO).
The proposed legislation, titled “University Teaching Hospitals (Reconstitution of Boards, etc.) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2025,” scaled its First Reading on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday.
The bill seeks to amend the existing University Teaching Hospitals Act to include the Federal University of Health Sciences, Otukpo, thereby enabling the creation of a fully functional teaching hospital affiliated with the institution.
It would be recalled that Senator Moro had earlier sponsored the bill establishing FUHSO, which was signed into law by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2022.
According to Moro, the new amendment is intended to complement the earlier legislation by providing the university with a dedicated teaching hospital to enhance medical training, research, and healthcare delivery in Benue State and Nigeria at large.
If passed, the bill will facilitate the development of critical infrastructure to support the institution’s mandate of producing skilled medical professionals and improving access to quality healthcare in the region.
