Tragedy struck at the weekend as a 300-level student of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Nwankwo Chukwuebuka Chrisantus, popularly known as DJ Brownlex, died in a road accident along the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway.
Nwankwo, a student of the Department of Economics and Political Science, reportedly lost his life on Saturday night while travelling with some classmates to attend Afrobeats star Davido’s concert in Enugu.
Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred when the vehicle conveying the students collided with a stationary truck after the driver lost control. Nwankwo and the driver died on the spot, while two other occupants, Okezie Ikesianachi and Arinze Emmanuel, sustained serious injuries. They are said to be receiving treatment at a nearby hospital and are in critical but stable condition.
Confirming the incident yesterday, the Acting Public Relations Officer of the university, Inya Agha Egwu, said about 10 UNN students were involved in the crash. He added that some of the injured were taken to Bishop Shanahan Hospital, Nsukka, where a few have since been discharged.
The University Management and community deeply condole with the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased student and pray for the repose of his soul,” Egwu said. “The Management also wishes the injured students a speedy recovery.”
Egwu advised students to avoid unnecessary night travel and to obtain clearance from the Student Affairs Department before embarking on off-campus trips, reaffirming the institution’s commitment to students’ safety and welfare.
On campus, news of Brownlex’s death threw the student community into mourning. The President of the National Economics Students’ Association (NESA), Osim Philip, described the incident as a painful blow to the student body, noting that the late student was well-loved for his talent, energy, and contribution to campus entertainment.
Until his death, DJ Brownlex was known across UNN for his vibrant personality and rising influence in the university’s entertainment scene.
