It had seemed like an impossible dream just months ago for the completion of the University of Jos Sports Complex ahead of the 2025 Nigerian Universities Games Association (NUGA) tournament. Construction delays, funding concerns, and logistical challenges had cast doubts on whether the venue would meet the tournament’s strict readiness deadline. But against all odds, the complex is now fully ready.
Dr. Udon Udoh, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Abdul Samad Rabiu Initiative (ASR Africa), confirmed the completion earlier today during a facility inspection at the University of Jos. According to him, the project’s readiness symbolizes the strength of collaboration between public institutions and private partners committed to advancing sports and youth development in Nigeria.
Speaking proudly at the event, Dr. Udoh remarked, “It seemed like a tug of war from the start. Everyone thought it would be impossible to deliver this sports complex before NUGA 2025. But today, we stand on this very ground, ready to host athletes from all over Nigeria. It’s a moment of triumph, not just for Jos but for the entire Nigerian university system.”
He noted that ASR Africa took on the project with a clear vision to enhance sporting infrastructure in Nigerian universities, explaining that sports remain a vital platform for youth engagement, leadership training, and national unity. “We at ASR Africa understand what sports mean to the nation’s development. It’s more than games, it’s about identity, discipline, and the future of our young people,” he added.
Dr. Udoh also reflected on his personal connection with university sports, revealing that he had been honoured with several NUGA awards in the past for his contributions to sports development and advocacy. “I understand the game, and I understand the spirit behind NUGA. Having been part of its history in different capacities, I know what it takes to keep that spirit alive,” he said.
The University of Jos, now the centre of national attention, had been racing against time to deliver a world-class facility suitable for track events, football, basketball, tennis, and indoor games. Many had doubted whether the university could meet the deadline, but the successful completion of the complex has been hailed as one of the most remarkable turnarounds in NUGA’s recent history.
The Nigeria Education News, reporting live from Jos, confirmed that the facility now boasts modern tracks, updated seating areas, athlete hostels, and improved drainage systems, ensuring readiness for Saturday’s official kickoff. The accreditation of participating universities is still ongoing, with delegates commending the host institution’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for the games.
University officials expressed gratitude to ASR Africa for its unwavering support and timely intervention, emphasizing that the project would serve beyond NUGA 2025. According to them, the sports complex will also function as a legacy infrastructure for future inter-university and national competitions.
Dr. Udoh concluded his remarks with optimism for the athletes arriving from across the country. “Let the competition begin. Let the young men and women of our universities show the best of themselves. This is the beauty of education when knowledge meets talent, and when discipline meets opportunity,” he declared.
With the newly completed sports complex gleaming under the Jos skyline, anticipation is building fast for the official start of the 2025 NUGA Games this Saturday. The atmosphere on campus is charged with energy as universities continue to arrive from every zone of the federation, marking what promises to be one of the most memorable editions in NUGA’s history.
