The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has launched its National Universities Commission (NUC)-accredited Master of Science (MSc) in Agroecology, aimed at advancing sustainable agriculture, food security, and ecosystem resilience across Africa.
The programme, implemented under the AGRECOFARM Initiative, was inaugurated at the Centre of Excellence in Agricultural Development and Sustainable Environment (CEADESE), with key stakeholders and faculty members in attendance. Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the Dean of the College of Agricultural Management and Rural Development (COLAMRUD) and Chairman of the Committee of Deans and Directors (CODAD), Prof. Emmanuel Fakoya, praised the AGRECOFARM Team led by Prof. Adewale Dipeolu for its dedication to the successful take-off of the programme.
According to Prof. Kehinde, the MSc in Agroecology is part of the European Erasmus+ AgroCOFA Project, which began in Italy in December 2023 and involves six West African universities from Ghana, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. The programme integrates theory and practice in sustainable agriculture, offering four specialisations: Crop and Mechanisation, Livestock Systems and Agroecology, Agribusiness and Sustainable Food Systems, and Natural Resources and Environment.
The Vice-Chancellor explained that the programme’s goal is to train agroecologists, researchers, and innovators who will promote climate-smart and inclusive agriculture aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the European Green Deal. He also encouraged students and young scientists to seize the opportunity to enhance their expertise and influence agricultural policy.
Prof. Adewale Dipeolu, the AGRECOFARM Coordinator, stated that the curriculum emphasises sustainability, international collaboration, ecosystem resilience, and food sovereignty. It features core agroecology courses, sector-specific electives, research projects, and industry internships designed to produce skilled professionals for global agricultural development.
During the launch, experts presented detailed insights into each specialisation. Prof. Victor Olowe of IFSERAR discussed Crop and Mechanisation, highlighting the integration of ecological and technological systems for efficient production. Prof. Olusiji Sowande of the Department of Animal Production and Health (APH) led the Livestock Systems and Agroecology session, focusing on biodiversity and circular production. Prof. Elijah Obayelu of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management (AEFM) presented Agribusiness and Sustainable Food Systems, stressing ethical profitability. Prof. Omotola Jayeola of the Department of Forestry and Wildlife Management concluded with Natural Resources and Environment, addressing ecological resilience and disaster management.
The launch reaffirmed FUNAAB’s commitment to driving innovation in agriculture, preparing graduates for leadership roles in sustainable food systems, and strengthening the continent’s response to climate change.
