As the 27th Nigeria University Games Association (NUGA) is officially about to kick off at the University of Jos, the basketball coach of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, Oliver B. Johnson, popularly known in basketball circles as Coach OBJ has expressed confidence in his team’s readiness and determination to make a strong impression at the tournament.
Speaking with The Nigeria Education News correspondent, on Friday, Coach OBJ described the atmosphere at the games as “tense but exciting,” as teams prepare for intense competition across multiple sporting events.
“For our basketball team, we believe we’ve prepared well. We came here not just to compete but also to see the facilities and ensure we’re ready,” he said.
Commenting on the facilities provided for basketball, Coach OBJ noted that the team was initially informed they would play in the indoor sports hall, which he confirmed was still undergoing final touches. “The indoor sports hall is still under construction, but with a few improvements, it could be even better than the current one. We might end up using both depending on how fast the work progresses,” he added.
He emphasized the importance of quality facilities in determining athletes’ performance. “You can’t have top-level sports without proper facilities. Whatever is ready in the next day or two is what we’ll use, just like other teams,” he said.

Speaking on accommodation, Coach OBJ commended the organizers for providing a conducive environment at the NDLEA Training Camp, where his team is lodged. “The facilities there are very good. This is our first time training on this campus, and so far, we are okay,” he said, acknowledging that good accommodation plays a vital role in the mental readiness of athletes.
On the team’s goals, he expressed confidence in their ambition to maintain ABU’s basketball legacy. “Most players want to represent their institutions with pride and perform at the top level. We didn’t come here to take last place. We’ve prepared enough to make it to the medals table,” he stated.
Coach OBJ reaffirmed his belief that ABU’s strong basketball tradition will reflect in their performance at the Games, as the team aims not just to participate but to contend for top honors.
The 27th NUGA Games preparation continues in Jos with contingents from various Nigerian universities competing in athletics, racket sports, combat sports, and other events, showcasing the spirit of sportsmanship and excellence.
