The University of Ibadan on Saturday honoured its 13th Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, at a valedictory ceremony celebrating his leadership, service and contributions to the institution.
The ceremony, held at Trenchard Hall under the theme “Celebrating Legacy, Leadership and Service,” brought together the Pro-Chancellor, vice-chancellors, provosts, directors, deans and other dignitaries.
Tributes at the event highlighted Adebowale’s commitment to preserving the university’s heritage, improving campus facilities and supporting students through difficult circumstances.
The opening address emphasised the responsibility of leading Nigeria’s premier university, noting that the position requires sound judgement, prudent management of resources and the ability to balance competing interests while pursuing academic excellence.
Adebowale was commended for helping to build a resilient and responsive institution capable of addressing contemporary challenges while maintaining its academic standing.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Damola Lewis, described the outgoing Vice-Chancellor as a steadfast leader who remained committed to the university despite personal challenges.
Lewis recalled an incident in which Adebowale was struck with stones during a protest, leaving a scar on his neck. According to him, the Vice-Chancellor continued to pursue his responsibilities despite the attack.
The dean also praised Adebowale’s response to student emergencies, saying he made himself available even late at night.
Lewis recounted an occasion when a student was hospitalised after ingesting a poisonous substance. He said Adebowale contributed at least ₦500,000 from his personal funds towards efforts to save the student and spent about four hours at the hospital. The student later died.
He added that Adebowale regularly intervened in students’ difficulties and sought opportunities to strengthen student leadership.
According to Lewis, after observing students’ union activities in the United Kingdom, Adebowale encouraged the University of Ibadan Students’ Union to undertake a study visit to learn from the experience.
He said two attempts to arrange the trip were unsuccessful because visas were not granted, adding that Adebowale personally provided most of the funds used for the applications.
Lewis further described the Vice-Chancellor as approachable, selfless and honest, saying contractors who worked on university projects had also spoken positively about his integrity.
A documentary screened during the ceremony showcased projects undertaken during Adebowale’s administration, including the rehabilitation of dilapidated buildings and improvements to student welfare facilities.
The event provided an opportunity for members of the university community and guests from various sectors to reflect on his stewardship and contributions to the institution.
