The University of Jos female basketball team began their NUGA 2025 campaign on a bright note, securing a walkover victory against the Niger Delta University (NDU) team after their opponents failed to show up for the scheduled match.
According to the match officials, the walkover was declared in line with basketball regulations after NDU did not appear within the stipulated time.
Meanwhile, the UNIJOS team faced a setback as the accreditation committee reduced their active roster to eight players, below the standard 18-player requirement for a basketball team by the NUGA rules.
Speaking after the match, the head coach of the UNIJOS female basketball team, Coach Kamsen Mordicai, expressed confidence in his players despite the reduction in squad size.
“There’s no immediate plan to increase the number of players,” he said. “I’ve told my girls to play for the team, not for individual glory. Nothing will stop us from winning the gold medal, even with eight players. We’re four teams in our group, and I don’t see any we can’t beat. Our focus now is on the next match and qualifying from the group stage.”
With this walkover win, the University of Jos female basketball team earned valuable points as they continue their quest for a medal in the ongoing NUGA 2025 games.
