Nigeria has emerged as the fifth-best English-speaking country in Africa, according to the 2025 Education First English Proficiency Index (EF EPI). The report, which assessed English skills across 123 countries and regions, used data from 2.2 million test takers. This year’s edition included speaking and writing skills for the first time, measured using artificial intelligence technology developed by EF’s education technology arm.
English, Nigeria’s official language, plays a central role in education, governance, media, and business, contributing to the country’s strong proficiency levels. Nigeria trails South Africa, Zimbabwe, Kenya, and Zambia in English proficiency on the African continent.
The rankings highlight the growing importance of English as a bridge for international communication, education, and commerce. “English remains the world’s most widely shared language for international communication,” said Kate Bell, author of the EF EPI and EF’s Head of Assessment.
The top 10 English-speaking countries in Africa are:
– 1. South Africa: Widespread use in government, education, media, and business
– 2. Zimbabwe: English is the primary language of instruction and administration
– 3. Kenya: Official language alongside Swahili, widely used in urban and professional settings
