When Dr Olugbemisola Titilayo Odusote assumes office on January 10, 2026, she will be stepping into history not just as the head of Nigeria’s premier legal training institution, but as the first woman to lead the Nigerian Law School since its establishment more than six decades ago.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday approved her appointment as Director-General of the Nigerian Law School for a four-year term, marking a significant milestone in the governance of legal education in the country.
Dr Odusote, 54, currently serves as the Deputy Director-General and Head of the Lagos Campus of the Law School. Her appointment takes effect immediately after the expiration of the tenure of the outgoing Director-General, Professor Isa Hayatu Chiroma, on January 9, 2026.
Professor Chiroma will be concluding an eight-year tenure at the helm of the institution.
Breaking a long-standing barrier
Established in 1962, the Nigerian Law School has trained generations of legal practitioners and remains the final gatekeeping institution for entry into the Nigerian Bar. Despite its central role in shaping the legal profession, it has never been led by a woman until now.
Observers say Dr Odusote’s appointment reflects a gradual, though cautious, shift in gender representation within Nigeria’s legal and public institutions.
Academic and professional background
Dr Odusote earned her Bachelor of Laws degree from Obafemi Awolowo University and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1988. She later obtained a Master of Laws degree from the same institution, specialising in company and commercial law.
She holds a doctorate in law from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom, with research interests in public law and the administration of justice.
She joined the Nigerian Law School in 2001 as a lecturer and has risen through the ranks, serving in several key positions including Head of the Academic Department, Director of Academics, and Head of Campus.
At various points in her career, she also served as a visiting scholar at Nottingham Trent University in the United Kingdom.
Leadership role and policy responsibilities
As Director-General, Dr Odusote will oversee the academic leadership and administrative management of the Law School across its campuses nationwide. Her responsibilities will also include providing strategic direction for legal education and professional training in Nigeria.
She will serve as the principal liaison between the Law School and key regulatory bodies, including the Council of Legal Education, the Body of Benchers and the Nigerian Bar Association.
According to the presidency, she has published extensively in reputable local and international law journals, presented papers at several legal education conferences, and served on committees of both the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Bar Association.
A transition moment for legal education
Her appointment comes at a time when Nigeria’s legal education system faces mounting pressure to adapt to reforms, growing enrolment numbers and evolving demands of legal practice.
While expectations are high, analysts note that her success will ultimately be measured by how effectively the institution balances academic rigor, professional standards and administrative efficiency in the years ahead.
The announcement was conveyed in a statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, on January 6, 2026.
