There was palpable excitement and celebration in Ilupeju Ekiti on Monday as the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Ilupeju Ekiti Special Study Centre, formally issued admission letters to a new set of students, marking a significant milestone in the educational development of the community.
The atmosphere at Toria Court, Magaranta, where the exercise took place, was described as joyful and colourful, as successful applicants received their admission letters amid cheers, prayers, and expressions of gratitude. Many of the newly admitted students could be seen jubilating, already looking forward to the day they would don the NOUN matriculation academic gown.
Community members and stakeholders hailed the development as a major breakthrough that would expand access to higher education for youths and working-class individuals in Ilupeju Ekiti and neighbouring towns, in line with NOUN’s mandate of providing flexible and inclusive university education.
Special commendations were extended to the Asiwaju of Ilupeju Ekiti ARC, Sir Dipo Ajayi, and the Yeye Oba of Ilupeju, Lady Alaba Ajayi, alongside the entire Ajayi family, for their roles and support in the establishment and actualisation of the Special Study Centre. The development was widely described as a collective achievement for the Ilupeju community.
Traditional rulers and institutions were also acknowledged, with congratulations pouring in for Kabiyesi Apeju, the Obanla of Ilupeju, members of the Apeju-in-Council, as well as the leadership and members of the IDA National Executive Council and both national and home branches of the association.
Speaking on the significance of the centre, community leaders noted that the presence of NOUN in Ilupeju Ekiti would reduce the burden of long-distance travel for students seeking university education, while also boosting human capital development and socio-economic growth in the area.
Appreciation was further extended to key individuals whose efforts contributed to the success of the project, including Prof. Oyawoye, the consultant to the centre; Alhaji Prince Amusa Rasaq; Engr. Femi Fagbemi; and Prince O. J. Oniyelu, who was described by stakeholders as a “sensitisation guru” for his advocacy and mobilisation efforts.
The pioneer Director of the NOUN Ilupeju Ekiti Special Study Centre, Dr. Musbau Olabanji Oyebode, alongside other members of staff, was warmly welcomed by the community, with assurances of cooperation and support to ensure the smooth running of academic and administrative activities.
Addressing the incoming students, community representatives encouraged them to take full advantage of the opportunity, remain focused on their studies, and uphold the values of discipline and excellence associated with the National Open University of Nigeria.
The admission exercise was described as the beginning of a new chapter for Ilupeju Ekiti, with residents expressing optimism that the Special Study Centre would, in the long run, produce graduates who would contribute meaningfully to the development of the community, Ekiti State, and the nation at large.
