The Vice-Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Professor Razaq Olatunde Rom Kalilu, on Tuesday commissioned a newly established crèche at the institution’s College of Health Sciences, describing the facility as a long overdue intervention to support working parents within the university community.
The brief commissioning ceremony, held within the College premises, was attended by key members of the university management, including the Registrar, Mrs. Olayinka Balogun, and the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Adenike Olugbenga Bello. The facility is expected to serve members of staff, particularly nursing mothers and caregivers, by providing a safe and structured environment for their young children during working hours.
Speaking at the event, Professor Kalilu emphasized that the establishment of the crèche reflects the university’s commitment to staff welfare and institutional development. He noted that the creation of the facility was necessary to enhance productivity and promote a supportive work environment, especially within the health sciences community where staff schedules can be demanding.
The Vice-Chancellor added that while the current facility marks an important step forward, the university intends to improve and expand the initiative. He assured staff that management would work toward facilitating a more befitting and purpose-built space in the near future to further enhance childcare services within the institution.
Professor Kalilu also charged those entrusted with managing the crèche to operate it with diligence and a sense of responsibility, stressing that the facility should be maintained to high standards in the interest of both staff and their children.
In her remarks, Professor Adenike Olugbenga Bello expressed appreciation to the university management for approving and supporting the establishment of the crèche. She described the initiative as a significant relief for staff members within the College of Health Sciences and a progressive step toward creating a more inclusive and family-friendly academic environment.
Other dignitaries present at the ceremony included the Secretary to the Board of the College of Health Sciences, Mr. Paul Akanbi; the Dean of Basic Medical Sciences, Dr. Saka Waidi; and Dr. Ganiyat Adeniran, who represented the Dean of Nursing Sciences, Professor Florence Oluyemisi Adeyemo, among others.
University stakeholders have described the commissioning as part of broader efforts by LAUTECH to strengthen staff support systems while improving institutional standards. The development signals a growing recognition within Nigerian universities of the importance of work-life balance and welfare-driven infrastructure in academic settings.
