Authorities have arrested suspects linked to the alleged harassment of students during a traditional festival in Ozoro, Delta State, following reports that triggered concern within the student community.
The incident, which reportedly occurred during a cultural event said to be intended to bless barren women, drew attention after allegations emerged that some students of Southern Delta University, Ozoro, were harassed and molested.
This was contained in a press report obtained by Nigeria Education News following the incident, which occurred recently.
In response, a delegation comprising the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Comrade Samson Ikpahwore; the Student Union Government (SUG) President of Southern Delta University, Oribelua Precious; and the Dean of Student Affairs conducted a fact-finding visit to the area.
The delegation stated that the visit was aimed at assessing the situation and ensuring the safety of students within the community.
According to the team, they moved around, engaged with affected students, and verified details surrounding the incident.
They also confirmed that some of the affected students were taken to the hospital for medical attention and are currently in stable condition.
The delegation further visited the palace of the traditional ruler of Ozoro Kingdom, where assurances were given that those responsible for the acts would be brought to justice.
The NANS JCC Chairman disclosed that some suspects were arrested at the scene by officers of the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ozoro.
Comrade Ikpahwore and Oribelua Precious, alongside the school management, assured students of their safety, stating that measures would be strengthened to protect them.
They also confirmed that the festival has been brought to an end and encouraged students to report any form of harassment, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining peace and security.
