The management of Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES-Iyin) has intensified efforts to build a strong institutional identity by positioning students as key ambassadors of its reputation. This initiative, driven by the university’s Public Relations Office, reflects a growing recognition that reputation management in modern universities extends beyond official communication to include the conduct and voices of students.
Speaking during a strategic engagement with class representatives across departments, the institution’s Public Relations Officer emphasized that Public Relations is not merely about publicity but about trust, credibility, and consistency. “Reputation is not built by chance. It is shaped deliberately and protected through consistent actions,” the PRO stated, noting that communication must reflect the true values and progress of the university.
The session, held with student leaders, was designed to foster a sense of responsibility among the institution’s pioneer students, who are regarded as foundational to the university’s evolving image. According to observations by The Nigeria Education News, the engagement highlighted the critical role students play in shaping public perception through their daily interactions, both on and off campus.
Participants at the meeting described the initiative as timely and impactful. A class representative who spoke after the session said, “We now understand that how we behave, what we say, and how we represent the school matters. We are not just students; we are the face of this university.” Another added that the interaction helped clarify misconceptions about Public Relations, particularly the idea that it is limited to media visibility.
During the engagement, the PRO stressed that effective Public Relations must be rooted in authenticity. “It is not about creating an image that does not exist. It is about amplifying what is real and ensuring that our actions align with our message,” he explained, reinforcing the need for integrity in institutional storytelling.
Staff members who spoke with The Nigeria Education News noted that the initiative reflects a broader institutional strategy to build a sustainable and credible brand. One academic staff member remarked, “For a young university like FUTES, reputation is everything. Engaging students early in this process is a smart and necessary move.”
The emphasis on collective responsibility was also central to the discussion, with the PRO reiterating that reputation management is not confined to a single office. “From management to staff and students, everyone contributes to how the university is perceived,” he stated, urging all stakeholders to be intentional in their roles.
Observers believe that this approach positions Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences as a forward-thinking institution that understands the dynamics of modern communication and branding in higher education. As The Nigeria Education News gathered, the initiative is expected to foster a culture of accountability, pride, and shared ownership among students.
With such deliberate efforts, FUTES-Iyin continues to lay the foundation for a strong and credible institutional identity, where every student becomes not just a learner, but a storyteller and custodian of the university’s emerging legacy.
