A final-year pharmacy student at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ayanbadejo Femi Emmanuel popularly known as Minister AFE is carving a unique identity at the intersection of academics and gospel music. His story is one of discipline, purpose, and a deep-rooted spiritual calling that has steadily evolved alongside his academic journey.
Born into a family of five as the second child, AFE describes himself as someone driven by love for God, music, and people. Beyond singing, he is also engaged in public speaking, video editing, and content creation, demonstrating a multifaceted personality that extends beyond the classroom and the stage.
Despite his passion for music, AFE remains committed to his academic discipline. He acknowledges that while pharmacy remains a significant career path rated “eight out of ten” in his personal ambition he is also open to the evolving nature of his calling. This duality reflects a careful balance between professional training and spiritual purpose.
His journey into music began early in childhood, marked by an unusual yet profound experience of composing melodies to hymns he had never previously heard. Over time, this innate inclination matured into a deeper spiritual conviction, as he began to see music not just as talent, but as a medium for gospel expression.
Songwriting, according to AFE, is largely inspired by scripture. Drawing heavily from biblical texts especially the Psalms he often translates spiritual insights into melodies. His creative process involves meditation, prayer, and spontaneous inspiration, sometimes emerging during personal devotion or while listening to sermons and gospel instrumentals.
While he does not identify a single role model, AFE acknowledges learning from several prominent gospel ministers. He admires the musical structure of Dunsin Oyekan, the lyrical depth of Nathaniel Bassey, and the vocal dexterity of Tasha Cobbs Leonard and Travis Greene. These influences, he explains, have helped shape what he calls the “AFE style.”
Campus life has significantly contributed to his artistic growth. Exposure to diverse talents, musical trends, and collaborative opportunities within the university environment has refined both his skill and confidence. He credits interactions with fellow ministers and campus performances as key elements in his development.
Among his most memorable experiences are ministrations at major platforms, including a worship session at OAU featuring Dunsin Oyekan, and a high-profile international youth convention in Lagos. Despite challenges such as illness and performance pressure, AFE recounts these moments as transformative, strengthened by prayer and preparation.
On campus, he has remained actively involved in ministry, serving in leadership roles within fellowship groups and participating in over twenty musical ministrations. However, leadership responsibilities have somewhat limited his frequency of public performances, highlighting the complexity of balancing service and expression.
Managing academics alongside ministry has not been without its challenges. Pharmacy, which he describes humorously as “a jealous course,” demands intense commitment. To navigate this, AFE relies on structured planning, mentorship, and strategic time management, ensuring neither academics nor ministry suffers neglect.
Financial limitations and time constraints also present hurdles, particularly in expanding his music career and visibility. Nonetheless, he approaches these challenges with patience, often choosing to wait for clarity and provision before pursuing ambitious projects.
Although he is yet to officially release songs on major streaming platforms, AFE has begun intentionally building his presence through social media, sharing clips and recordings of his ministrations. He envisions a future where his music reaches a broader audience while remaining rooted in spiritual authenticity.
Addressing concerns about industry gatekeeping, AFE maintains that success in gospel music is less about affiliation with groups and more about divine direction. He emphasizes that each individual’s journey is unique and should be guided by purpose rather than external expectations.
For aspiring student musicians, his advice is clear: understand your calling, create structure, and maintain balance. In his words, “know the God you are singing to,” as this foundation ultimately determines both direction and fulfillment.
AFE’s story stands as a compelling narrative of purpose-driven living where academic excellence and spiritual devotion are not in conflict, but in harmony, shaping a path that is both impactful and inspiring.
