The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has unveiled the 2026 edition of its National Essay Competition, a nationwide initiative designed to promote disaster awareness, critical thinking, and youth engagement in emergency preparedness across Nigeria.
The competition, targeted at secondary school students, tertiary institution undergraduates, and members of the NYSC Emergency Management Vanguards (NYSC-EMVs), is aimed at raising a generation of young Nigerians equipped with the knowledge and skills to contribute to disaster risk reduction and community resilience.
Announcing the initiative, NEMA emphasized the unpredictable nature of disasters and the urgent need for proactive strategies to mitigate their impact. The agency noted that the essay competition provides a platform for young people to develop innovative ideas and practical solutions to disaster-related challenges facing the country.
According to NEMA, interested participants are required to confirm their eligibility within the three designated categories before selecting the appropriate topic. Participants are expected to conduct thorough research on disaster preparedness, climate change, or emergency response, and develop well-structured essays that demonstrate originality, clarity, and relevance.
Entries must be carefully reviewed and edited before submission through the official NEMA channel ahead of the deadline.
The competition features three distinct categories reflecting key national concerns:
- Secondary School Category: “My Role in Disaster Risk Reduction”
- Tertiary Institution Category: “Climate Change and Disaster Management in Nigeria”
- NYSC-EMV Category: “Technology for Disaster Response: Opportunities and Challenges”
NEMA stated that the topics were deliberately selected to address pressing issues such as climate change and the growing role of technology in managing emergencies.
The agency outlined a comprehensive evaluation process, which includes screening submissions for eligibility, assessing originality and creativity, and evaluating the depth of analysis and understanding of each topic. Entries will also be judged based on clarity, structure, coherence, and the practicality of proposed solutions.
Top entries across all categories will be shortlisted, with final winners emerging after a rigorous selection process.
To incentivize participation, NEMA announced substantial rewards for outstanding entries. The overall winner will receive a cash prize of ₦500,000 along with a trophy, while the first and second runners-up will receive ₦300,000 and ₦200,000 respectively. Certificates of recognition will also be awarded to the top ten participants.
Winners will be officially announced and celebrated through multiple media platforms, with selected participants also engaged in advocacy efforts to promote disaster preparedness nationwide.
Education and emergency management stakeholders have commended the initiative, describing it as a strategic approach to integrating disaster risk education into youth development. They noted that early exposure to disaster awareness can significantly enhance community resilience and national preparedness.
NEMA has set April 15, 2026, as the deadline for submission of entries, urging interested participants to adhere strictly to the timeline to avoid disqualification.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to public education and community-based disaster management, emphasizing that initiatives like the National Essay Competition remain crucial in building a safety-conscious and proactive society.
