The Senate of Obafemi Awolowo University has directed all students of the institution to resume academic activities on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, following the expiration of the three-week mid-semester break earlier declared by the university management.
The decision was contained in an internal memorandum issued by the Principal Assistant Registrar, Senate Division, Mr. I. B. Aronkola, after a special meeting of the university Senate held on Thursday, May 14, 2026.
According to the memo addressed to all Deans of Faculties, the Senate extensively deliberated on the resumption of students after the temporary break introduced to address concerns surrounding the institution’s newly introduced transportation system.

The university explained that the three-week moratorium was initially approved to provide the administration with enough time to engage relevant stakeholders and resolve issues generated by the transport policy within the campus community.
Senate noted during the meeting that all matters arising from the situation had been “sufficiently addressed,” thereby making it necessary for students to return and continue academic activities without further delay.
The memorandum stated that the three-week break would officially elapse on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, after which lectures and all other academic engagements would immediately resume across faculties and departments.
“After an exhaustive deliberation on the matter, Senate agreed that students should resume on Tuesday, 19th May, 2026, and all academic activities would commence immediately,” the memo partly read.
The university management also directed all Deans to take note of the Senate’s resolution and ensure necessary actions were implemented within their respective faculties.
Copies of the memorandum were equally forwarded to the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Chairman of the Committee of Deans, Dean of Student Affairs, and Acting Director of Academic Affairs for appropriate administrative action.
The development comes weeks after concerns emerged among students over transportation arrangements within the institution, leading to debates and engagements between university authorities and stakeholders on the best approach to ease mobility challenges on campus.
Although the university did not disclose specific details of the resolutions reached regarding the transportation concerns, the Senate’s latest decision signals management’s confidence that the issues have now been adequately resolved.
Students are now expected to return to campus immediately and continue with the academic calendar as scheduled by the institution.
The resumption announcement has already generated reactions among students on social media, with many expressing relief over the reopening of the university after weeks of uncertainty surrounding academic activities.
The memo was signed by Mr. I. B. Aronkola, Principal Assistant Registrar, Senate Division, on behalf of the university management.
