Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, has inducted 114 Computer Science graduates into the Computer Professionals Registration Council of Nigeria (CPN), with a call for them to uphold professional ethics, integrity and innovation.
Speaking at the institution’s second induction ceremony for B.Sc. Computer Science graduates, Vice-Chancellor Professor Joseph Babatola Ayodele urged the inductees to apply their knowledge to solving societal problems.
Ayodele, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development), Professor Michael Olufemi Oke, said professional responsibility required both technical competence and responsible conduct.
He encouraged the graduates to become problem-identifiers, solution providers, innovators and critical thinkers, highlighting opportunities in cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data science, software engineering and digital transformation.
“I therefore urge you to use your skills not only to advance your careers but also to impact the society positively,” he said.
The vice-chancellor also urged them to embrace continuous learning, adaptability and discipline to remain relevant in the changing technology sector.
In his remarks, the Dean of the Faculty of Physical Sciences, Professor O. L. Ademilua, expressed confidence in the graduates’ ability to excel. He attributed their preparedness to the university’s investment in teaching facilities, practical training and professional development.
Ademilua commended the university administration for supporting academic excellence and the application of digital technology to societal challenges.
Earlier, the Head of the Department of Computer Science, Dr. Oluwatoyin Yerokun, emphasised the importance of professional registration and ethical standards, particularly as artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies raise questions about accountability and responsible use.
She highlighted projects developed by the department, including an electronic recruitment system, an automated professorial assessment system, a real-time mail tracking system and a biometric vehicle monitoring system.
Yerokun also appealed to management to expedite plans to unbundle Computer Science into six specialised programmes: Software Engineering, Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Information and Communication Technology, and Computer Science.
She said the proposed restructuring would respond to developments in the technology industry and demand for specialised digital skills.
The ceremony featured a lecture titled “Ethical Innovation for Professional Leadership,” delivered by Dr. Josephine Mebawondu, a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti.
Members of the university management and other staff attended the event.
