The National Association of Nigerian Students (National Association of Nigerian Students) has elected Akinteye Babatunde of the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology as its new national president following the conclusion of its 2026 national convention held at the Old Parade Ground, Abuja.
Akinteye, a former NANS Senate President, emerged winner after a keenly contested election involving five presidential candidates, succeeding the outgoing president, Olushola Oladoja, who has completed his tenure.
The convention was conducted under tight security presence, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force and operatives of the Department of State Services, and was widely described by participants as one of the most peaceful in the history of the association.
In his acceptance remarks shortly after the announcement of results, Akinteye expressed appreciation to delegates for their confidence in his leadership, pledging to build on the achievements of the outgoing administration while strengthening unity among Nigerian students.
He commended the orderly conduct of the convention, noting that the election process was free of violence, disruptions, or disputes among contestants.
According to him, the peaceful outcome reflects a renewed spirit of unity within NANS, adding that his administration would prioritise student welfare and campus engagement across the country.
“Our activities will soon be felt across campuses, and Nigerian students will see a more active and responsive leadership,” he assured.
Outgoing President, Olushola Oladoja, described the successful election as one of the high points of his administration, expressing satisfaction that the process produced a credible successor.
He praised the new leadership and expressed confidence that Akinteye would surpass the achievements recorded during his tenure.
The Chairman of the Independent Convention Planning Committee, Omotayo Samuel, disclosed that over 300 delegates participated in the convention, including SUG presidents, senate presidents, and other student leaders from tertiary institutions nationwide.
The electoral race featured candidates from several institutions, including the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Federal University of Technology Akure, and the Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta, among others.
