The Lagos State University (LASU) has successfully concluded the 2026/2027 Students’ Union General Election, with more than 6,500 students participating in an electronic voting process that has been widely commended for its transparency, efficiency, and credibility.
The election, conducted across the university’s campuses through a digital voting platform, resulted in the emergence of Rufai Akanni Obipehin as the 37th President of the Lagos State University Students’ Union (LASUSU), while Abdulrahman Temidayo Imam was elected as the 37th Speaker of the Students’ Parliamentary Council (SPC).
The exercise marked another milestone in LASU’s adoption of technology-driven governance, with stakeholders describing the process as one of the most transparent and innovative student elections in the institution’s history.
University authorities attributed the success of the exercise to the collaborative efforts of management, students, and key administrative units. The election was conducted under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, with technical support from the Directorate of Information and Communication Technology (DICT) and administrative coordination by the Students’ Affairs Division.
Speaking after the election, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin, praised the seamless conduct of the exercise and noted that the electronic voting model demonstrated the potential of technology to strengthen electoral integrity.
According to him, the success recorded by LASU provides evidence that electronic voting can be effectively deployed in larger electoral processes across the country.
He also commended members of staff, security personnel, and the student-led Independent Electoral Committee (IEC) for their professionalism and commitment to delivering a credible election.
A notable highlight of the exercise was the emergence of Honourable Theresa Tobiloba Gabriel as the first female Chairperson of the LASUSU Independent Electoral Committee, making history within the institution’s student electoral system.
The electoral process began with the Students’ Parliamentary Council elections and concluded with faculty, departmental, college, and school elections across the university.
The Vice-Chancellor congratulated all elected representatives and participants, describing the election as a reflection of the university’s commitment to democratic values, responsible leadership, and technological innovation.
The successful conduct of the election further reinforces LASU’s growing reputation as a leading institution in the deployment of digital solutions to enhance transparency, participation, and good governance within the university community.
