The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the suspension of the 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course for prospective corps members posted to Niger State, citing ongoing renovation work at the state’s orientation camp.
The development has left many prospective corps members and their families awaiting further directives as the scheme works to provide alternative arrangements for the affected participants.
In a notice shared on its official social media platform on Sunday, the NYSC explained that the temporary suspension became necessary to ensure that participants would undergo the mandatory orientation programme in a conducive and safe environment.
“This is to notify the General Public and Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) deployed to Niger State for the 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course that their Orientation Course Exercise is suspended for now due to ongoing renovation work at the Orientation Camp,” the statement read.
The scheme assured the affected prospective corps members that they would be contacted promptly regarding the new venue and date for the commencement of the orientation exercise.
“PCMs affected should note that they will be contacted at a short notice on where and when to report for their Orientation Course,” the NYSC added.
The management of the scheme also expressed regret over the inconvenience the decision may cause prospective corps members and their parents, appealing for understanding as efforts continue to improve camp facilities.
“The Management regrets all inconveniences to the affected PCMs and their parents,” the statement noted.
The suspension highlights the growing concerns surrounding the condition of some orientation camp facilities across the country and the need for continuous investment in infrastructure that supports national service programmes.
The Niger State NYSC Orientation Camp, located in Paiko, Paikoro Local Government Area, had earlier suffered significant damage following a severe windstorm that affected key structures within the facility.
Reports indicated that the disaster destroyed parts of the male hostels, the multi-purpose hall, kitchen, and staff quarters, prompting urgent intervention from the state government.
In response to the incident, Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, directed immediate rehabilitation works to restore the camp and ensure that it meets acceptable standards for future orientation exercises.
The latest suspension is not an isolated case. Similar disruptions linked to renovation activities have been recorded in some states, including Enugu and Osun, earlier in the year, reflecting broader infrastructure challenges affecting youth development programmes in the country.
The 2026 Batch B Stream I Orientation Course officially commenced nationwide on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, and was originally scheduled to conclude on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.
For thousands of Nigerian graduates, the three-week orientation programme represents the first phase of the compulsory one-year national service, providing opportunities for leadership training, civic education, and cultural integration.
As affected prospective corps members await fresh directives from the NYSC, stakeholders have called for sustained investment in camp infrastructure to prevent recurring disruptions that could undermine the smooth implementation of the national service scheme.
