President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the transformation of the Institute of Petroleum Studies, Kaduna, into the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology, a move expected to strengthen specialised education in science, engineering and technology.
The President announced the development during his Democracy Day address on Friday, monitored by Nigeria Education News, as he paid tribute to the late General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua for his contributions to national development and democratic advancement.
“In recognition of his contributions, the Federal Government has approved the revitalisation and renaming of the Institute of Petroleum Studies Centre as the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology,” Tinubu said.
The newly designated university is expected to focus on teaching, research and innovation in geological sciences, petroleum studies, mining, engineering and other technology-driven disciplines critical to Nigeria’s economic development.
The development signals a renewed commitment to building human capital in strategic sectors that support industrialisation, energy security and economic diversification.
Education stakeholders have described the upgrade as a significant step towards expanding opportunities for advanced research, innovation and specialised training, while addressing the growing demand for skilled professionals in engineering and extractive industries.
Beyond its academic significance, the renaming honours the legacy of General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua, a former military leader and political figure widely recognised for his role in promoting national unity and democratic ideals.
The announcement formed part of several policy and development initiatives unveiled by the President during the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, reflecting the administration’s emphasis on education, human capital development and investment in knowledge-based sectors.
