Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has congratulated the pioneer graduating class of MIVA Open University, describing their achievement as proof that technology is opening new opportunities for Nigerians to access quality higher education.
The governor spoke during the university’s maiden convocation ceremony held at the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts in Iganmu, Lagos.
Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, Sanwo-Olu said the graduation marked an important moment not only for the institution but also for the future of digital learning in Nigeria.
According to him, the success of the first graduating class demonstrates that learning is no longer limited to traditional classrooms and that technology can help remove barriers that have prevented many people from accessing university education.
He praised the graduates for their resilience and commitment, describing them as pioneers of a learning model that is changing the way higher education is delivered.
Sanwo-Olu also commended the founders and management of MIVA Open University for embracing innovation and expanding access to education through technology.
He noted that the institution’s approach aligns with Lagos State’s vision of building a knowledge-driven economy powered by innovation, technology and human capital development.
The governor highlighted initiatives such as Lagos Innovates, the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund and the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy as part of efforts to equip young people with skills needed for a rapidly changing world.
He urged the graduates to embrace lifelong learning, innovation and entrepreneurship as they move into the next phase of their lives.
Also speaking at the event, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, said MIVA’s first convocation reflects the growing role of technology in expanding access to quality education.
He noted that the university has shown that flexible learning can be delivered without compromising academic standards.
Delivering the keynote address, the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, described education as a fundamental right and stressed the need to make learning accessible to more Nigerians.
Sanusi commended the university’s model, saying it provides opportunities for learners regardless of their location. He also renewed calls for greater investment in girl-child education, describing it as critical to national development.
The Chancellor of MIVA Open University, Sim Shagaya, expressed confidence in the graduates, saying they are well positioned to make meaningful contributions to society and excel in their chosen careers.
The convocation ceremony marked the graduation of the university’s first set of students since its establishment, a milestone many stakeholders described as significant for the future of open and digital learning in Nigeria.
