Paul University, Awka, has suspended one of its lecturers indefinitely following allegations of sexual misconduct involving a female student, as the institution moves to contain growing concerns within the university community.
The university said the lecturer, Mr. Chukwuemeka Eze, a practical biology technologist in the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences, was removed from duty pending the outcome of both an internal disciplinary process and investigations by security agencies.
In a statement issued by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Nnaemeka Onukwufor, the university said the allegation was formally brought to its attention on July 14.
The management explained that it swiftly invited law enforcement authorities to take over the matter after the incident triggered tension among students and raised concerns about possible unrest on campus.
While emphasising that the suspension does not amount to a declaration of guilt, the university said it considered the measure necessary to protect the integrity of the investigation and preserve order within the institution.
Paul University described itself as a faith-based institution founded on principles of discipline, integrity and respect for human dignity, insisting that sexual harassment and every form of sexual misconduct remain unacceptable regardless of the status of those involved.
The university stated that any staff member or student found to have violated its regulations or the laws of the country would face appropriate sanctions in accordance with due process.
Management also acknowledged the emotional impact the incident may have had on members of the university community, particularly the affected student, announcing plans to provide counselling and psychological support for those directly or indirectly affected.
It assured parents, students and the public that every necessary step would be taken to guarantee justice while maintaining a safe and secure learning environment.
The development follows the circulation of a viral video on social media earlier this week showing a man, alleged to be a university lecturer, fleeing through a window after students reportedly interrupted an alleged sexual encounter with a female student inside an office.
The incident was initially linked to Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, but the institution denied any connection, stating that the individual involved was not a member of its academic staff.
Paul University later identified the lecturer in the video as Mr. Eze, confirming that he is employed by the institution. Beyond his academic role, Eze also serves as an Anglican priest in Anambra State.
The university said investigations are ongoing and pledged to handle the matter transparently while ensuring fairness to all parties involved.
