The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) have received a major boost following a commitment by an alumnus of the institution and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Lekki Gardens Group, Dr. Richard Nyong, to construct a 200-room hostel for students.
The Nigeria Education News gathered that the pledge was made during the close-out ceremony, public lecture and book launch organised in honour of the University’s outgoing ninth Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill. The proposed hostel project is expected to complement ongoing initiatives aimed at reducing the persistent shortage of on-campus accommodation experienced by thousands of students.
Investigations indicate that the planned facility is intended to provide additional residential spaces for students while supporting the University’s drive to create a more conducive learning environment. Student housing has remained one of the major infrastructure challenges confronting many Nigerian public universities, with growing enrolment placing increasing pressure on existing hostel facilities.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Nyong, who graduated from UNIPORT, explained that the project represents his commitment to giving back to the institution that shaped his academic and professional journey. He noted that construction of the hostel would commence immediately, adding that the initiative would also strengthen the University’s capacity to accommodate its growing student population.
During his keynote lecture titled “Leadership and Giving Back Purposefully: Two Sides of the Same Coin of Impact,” Nyong emphasised that genuine leadership extends beyond occupying positions of authority and should be reflected in meaningful contributions to society. He encouraged professionals and successful alumni to invest in educational institutions through projects capable of creating lasting value for future generations of students.
Further findings revealed that the outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, described the gesture as another indication of the growing confidence that alumni and development partners have in the University. He expressed appreciation to members of the Governing Council, staff, donors and strategic partners whose support contributed to the achievements recorded during his administration, stating that he was leaving office with a sense of fulfilment after seeing many of the institution’s development goals realised.
The Chairman of the occasion, Justice Biobele Georgewill, also commended the outgoing Vice-Chancellor for providing purposeful leadership throughout his tenure and acknowledged the importance of alumni participation in expanding infrastructure across Nigerian universities.
Education analysts note that alumni-funded infrastructure projects are becoming increasingly significant as universities seek alternative sources of funding to address deficits in student housing, lecture facilities, laboratories and other essential amenities. Such partnerships are viewed as critical to improving campus life, enhancing students’ welfare and supporting the delivery of quality higher education.
If completed as proposed, the 200-room hostel is expected to become one of the notable private-sector contributions to infrastructure development at the University of Port Harcourt, reinforcing the role of alumni engagement in advancing sustainable growth within Nigeria’s university system.
