Renowned businesswoman, philanthropist and Christian leader, Folorunso Alakija, celebrated her 75th birthday with a thanksgiving service centred on faith, gratitude and service to humanity, using the occasion to unveil six new books designed to inspire stronger families, deepen spiritual growth and encourage purposeful living.
The thanksgiving celebration, held at her residence in Ikoyi, Lagos, attracted family members, friends, associates, religious leaders and several prominent personalities from across the country. Rather than hosting an elaborate social event, the gathering focused on worship, prayers and thanksgiving, reflecting Alakija’s long-standing commitment to Christian values and her desire to dedicate the milestone to God’s faithfulness throughout her life.
One of the major highlights of the event was the unveiling of six publications covering themes of marriage, relationships, leadership, faith and personal development. The books—Still in Love at 80 and Beyond: Navigating the Realities of Marriage; Love Questions, Honest Answers; Love With Your Eyes Open; Breaking News: Back to Sender Prayers – God Said, “Who Sent You?”; Marriage Playbook: Gems for Married Couples; and Two Hearts, One Lifetime—draw from her personal experiences, Christian teachings and years of mentoring individuals and families.
During the ceremony, the books were formally reviewed, giving guests insight into the lessons and practical guidance contained in each publication. The works explore issues relating to healthy marriages, effective communication, spiritual discipline, family values and purposeful living, reflecting Alakija’s desire to preserve the principles that have guided her personal, business and ministry life over several decades.
Expressing gratitude during the thanksgiving service, Alakija attributed her achievements and longevity to God’s grace, thanking Him for His continuous protection, favour and faithfulness throughout her life’s journey. She described reaching the age of 75 as a testimony of divine mercy and an opportunity to encourage others to remain steadfast in faith regardless of life’s challenges.
The celebration featured praise and worship sessions led by renowned gospel saxophonist Beejay Sax, while gospel artistes Dare Justified, Chigozie Wisdom and Tosin Bee ministered in songs. A Bible reading by one of Alakija’s grandsons added a personal touch to the event, while Pastors Tolu Odukoya and J. T. Kalejaye participated in the thanksgiving service, with Kalejaye delivering a sermon emphasising the importance of gratitude and unwavering trust in God.
Serving as the master of ceremonies, broadcaster Ayo Mairo-Ese described Alakija as “a woman who is truly an Amazon,” acknowledging her remarkable contributions to entrepreneurship, philanthropy, leadership and Christian ministry over the years.
Among the dignitaries present were former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria Olayemi Cardoso, family members, business associates and other distinguished guests who joined in celebrating her life and enduring legacy.
Beyond commemorating her birthday, the unveiling of the six books underscored Alakija’s commitment to using literature as a platform for mentoring future generations. Through the publications, she seeks to share practical lessons on building enduring families, strengthening faith, promoting ethical leadership and living a life anchored on integrity, compassion and service to humanity.
