Students of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy (LJLA) have completed a community intervention project at Alapere Community Senior High School, Kosofe, delivering a solar-powered ICT centre and a refurbished library to enhance digital learning and improve literacy among students.
The project, executed under the Fellows’ capstone initiative, Team U.P.G.R.A.D.E. (Unlocking Potential through Growth, Research and Applied Digital Education), converted the school’s old library into a modern learning space equipped with computer facilities and reading resources.
The initiative, themed “Bridging the Digital Divide: Empowering for Global Competitiveness,” also introduced a Book Reading Club aimed at encouraging a stronger reading culture among students.
Activities marking the commissioning included a debate competition, a teachers’ capacity-building session on digital teaching methods, and a tree-planting exercise to promote environmental sustainability.
The newly established ICT centre operates on solar power and features laptops loaded with offline Computer-Based Testing (CBT) software to support students preparing for external examinations, including the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The Fellows said the project is expected to benefit between 150 and 300 students annually during its initial phase.
Speaking at the event, Executive Secretary of the Lateef Jakande Leadership Academy, Ayisat Agbaje-Okunade, said the project reflects the Academy’s emphasis on developing leaders who solve real-life challenges through practical interventions.
She described the initiative as an example of how leadership training can translate into measurable community impact.
Team Lead, Titilope Anifowoshe, said the project was inspired by the desire to give back to society through a sustainable intervention capable of improving educational opportunities for young people.
She added that the Fellows were motivated by the Lagos State Government’s investment in leadership development and community service.
The commissioning ceremony attracted government officials, education administrators, community leaders and students.
Among those present were the General Manager of the Lagos State Ferry Services, Abdulbaq Ladi Balogun, representatives of the Lagos State Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, officials from Education District II, school administrators and traditional leaders.
Former Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area, Dele Osinowo, commended the initiative and pledged support towards expanding the facility to benefit more students.
