The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, has called on the Lagos State Government, security agencies and the management of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) to strengthen security around the institution following reports of alleged cult-related violence in the YABATECH community.
Afeez, in a statement, described the reported incidents as disturbing and warned that violence linked to cult activities could undermine the safety and wellbeing of students.
He said tertiary institutions should remain safe environments where students can pursue their education without fear of being caught up in criminal or violent activities.
The NANS president called for an urgent strengthening of security measures around the institution, including improved intelligence gathering, surveillance and security presence.
He also urged security agencies to take decisive action against individuals found to be involved in cult-related activities or other criminal acts.
According to Afeez, protecting students must remain a priority for all stakeholders, particularly amid concerns over the safety of members of the YABATECH community.
He appealed to the Lagos State Government and relevant security authorities to work closely with the college management to prevent further incidents and ensure that students can learn in a secure environment.
The NANS president further urged stakeholders not to allow violence to become normalised within or around educational institutions.
He said sustained collaboration among government authorities, security agencies, institution management, students and the wider community would be necessary to address security threats and protect lives.
The statement comes amid broader concerns over school and campus security in Nigeria, with education stakeholders increasingly calling for stronger intelligence-led approaches to protecting learners and educational communities.
