Students of the Biomedical Engineering and Technology Department at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), have demonstrated how university education can move beyond examinations and certificates to solve real-life problems.
The students developed and presented a custom-made transtibial prosthetic device to Mr Adamu Abdullahi, a 60-year-old amputee who had relied on supporters for movement since losing his left leg in a road accident in 2003. He had also reportedly spent about 11 years as a mendicant around FUTA’s North Gate.
The initiative began in 2023 when Dr Ebenezer Atoyebi identified Adamu as a potential beneficiary of a practical project under the course Prosthetics and Orthotics (BMT502). Students from the 2024/2025 academic session developed initial models, while the 2025/2026 class completed and funded the final device, which was presented on August 21, 2026.
The project offers a powerful lesson for Nigerian higher education: students should not graduate merely knowing how to answer examination questions; they should leave university knowing how to identify problems and design solutions.
The Head of Department, Professor Isiaka Oladele, urged students to look beyond the classroom and become problem-solvers within their communities. Dr Atoyebi similarly stressed that knowledge becomes more meaningful when it is transformed into practical solutions to immediate societal needs.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Adenike Oladiji described the initiative as an example of community service and called for greater institutional, governmental and private-sector support to expand such interventions.
FUTA’s experience demonstrates what Nigerian universities could achieve when teaching, innovation and community needs are deliberately connected. Instead of treating student projects as assignments that end with grades, institutions can turn them into prototypes, technologies, businesses and social interventions.
The bigger challenge is now to make such projects sustainable. Universities need funding for innovation, access to laboratories and fabrication facilities, industry partnerships, intellectual-property support and pathways for successful student inventions to reach the wider public.
The FUTA project therefore represents more than one prosthetic limb. It is evidence that when students are encouraged to solve real problems, a classroom project can become a life-changing intervention.
