The Federal Government has opened applications for the 2026 National Research Fund (NRF) of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), with N10 billion earmarked to support research in 30 priority areas.
The fund, announced by TETFund in its 2026 call for concept notes signed by its Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, is open to lecturers in public tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
The application portal is scheduled to open on Monday, August 31, 2026, while the deadline for submission of concept notes is October 15, 2026.
TETFund said the latest funding cycle is intended to strengthen research capacity in Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions and support studies capable of addressing national development challenges.
Unlike a direct application for full research funding, the process will begin with the submission of concept notes by Principal Investigators (PIs).
Only researchers whose concept notes are evaluated and considered fundable will be invited to proceed to the full proposal stage.
The submitted concept notes will be assessed by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee, after which successful Principal Investigators will be notified and invited to submit detailed proposals online.
TETFund said Principal Investigators and at least one member of the research team behind proposals that pass the screening stage will also be required to defend their research before the committee.
Successful proposals will subsequently be presented to the TETFund Board of Trustees for approval and disbursement.
The 2026 fund covers 30 priority thematic areas grouped under Humanities and Social Sciences; Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation; and Cross-Cutting areas.
The priority areas include education and human capital, agriculture and food security, health and social welfare, information technology, power and energy, science and engineering, water and sanitation, transport and infrastructure, as well as citizenship, governance, conflict and security.
The fund also includes emerging areas such as the blue economy, clean and affordable energy, entrepreneurship and wealth creation, resource governance, national systems of innovation, and innovation and technology for national defence capabilities.
TETFund said multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research involving scholars from different disciplines would be encouraged under the 2026 cycle.
The Principal Investigator must be institution-based, while the researcher’s institution will serve as the coordinating institution and guarantor for the proper application of funds.
The entire application process will be conducted online through the TETFund National Research Fund portal, with applicants expected to study the research brief and application guidelines before submitting their concept notes.
The 2026 funding allocation represents an increase from the previous cycle, which saw more than N6.09 billion committed to 174 research projects in 2025.
TETFund has also warned that there will be no extension of the October 15 deadline, making the current application window particularly important for lecturers seeking funding for research projects.
With the new cycle covering areas ranging from education and human capital to technology, health, agriculture, energy and the blue economy, the programme provides researchers in public tertiary institutions an opportunity to develop studies around some of the country’s major development priorities.
The emphasis on concept-note screening before full proposals are invited also means prospective applicants will have to demonstrate the relevance, quality and potential impact of their proposed research from the initial stage.
