The St. Gregory’s College Old Boys Association has honoured the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, with a Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his career in public service and leadership.
Disu received the award on Saturday at a grand reception in Lagos, where the association also honoured the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr Olayemi Cardoso, as part of activities celebrating distinguished former students of the institution.
The recognition of Disu highlighted more than three decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and his professional progression since completing his secondary education at St. Gregory’s College in 1985.
According to the Nigeria Police Force, the award acknowledged various stages of Disu’s career, including his experience in frontline policing, criminal investigation, intelligence operations, international peacekeeping and senior command responsibilities.
Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police and subsequently served in several operational and leadership positions, including Commander of the Lagos State Rapid Response Squad, Head of the Intelligence Response Team and Commissioner of Police. He was appointed Inspector-General of Police in February 2026.
The association also recognised aspects of his professional career associated with professionalism, intelligence-led policing, accountability, personnel welfare, community partnership and the use of technology in public safety.
For the school community and its alumni, the recognition also provided an opportunity to highlight the relationship between education, values and subsequent professional service. St. Gregory’s College describes its educational philosophy as being built around faith and knowledge, reflected in its motto, Pro Fide et Scientia.
Reacting to the honour, Disu expressed appreciation to the St. Gregory’s College Old Boys Association and described the recognition from his alma mater as particularly significant.
The Inspector-General said the values and education he received at St. Gregory’s College had remained important influences in his professional journey and commitment to public service.
He also reaffirmed his commitment to serving Nigeria with integrity and contributing to the development of a professional, accountable and people-centred Nigeria Police Force.
The recognition places renewed attention on the role of alumni associations in maintaining connections between educational institutions and their former students, particularly by celebrating professional achievements and encouraging younger generations to remain connected to the values of their alma mater.
It also demonstrates how schools can continue to shape the professional identity of their former students long after graduation, with alumni achievements becoming part of the institutional history and legacy of the schools they attended.
The Nigeria Police Force further highlighted the importance of education, values and mentorship in preparing officers and other professionals to contribute meaningfully to national development.
For St. Gregory’s College, the Lifetime Achievement Award to one of its distinguished old boys represents another moment in the institution’s long history of celebrating former students whose careers have taken them into significant professional and public-service roles.
The honour therefore combines recognition of Disu’s documented career with a broader reminder of the continuing relationship between educational formation, professional responsibility, alumni engagement and service to society.
