The Federal Government has proposed a new timetable for Nigeria’s major public examinations in 2027, scheduling the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination ahead of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), while introducing stricter teacher qualification requirements for examination centres.
Under the proposed schedule, NECO’s examination is expected to run from April 1 to May 14, 2027, while WAEC’s WASSCE is scheduled for May 11 to June 18. Both examinations are expected to release results in August 2027, according to a communiqué issued after a September 30 meeting involving the Minister of State for Education, examination bodies and representatives of private schools.
The dates are still subject to confirmation by the respective examination bodies. The proposed timetable does not state that candidates will no longer need to sit for WAEC.
The meeting was convened to harmonise examination schedules and address teacher qualification requirements for schools seeking approval to serve as examination centres.
The proposed timetable also places the 2027 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), between March 15 and 25, with results expected in March.
The NECO examination is scheduled to begin on April 1 and end on May 14, while WAEC’s examination is expected to start on May 11 and conclude on June 18. The proposed dates therefore overlap between May 11 and May 14, leaving details of how the examination bodies will manage the schedules to be confirmed.
The National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) and the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS) are both listed to conduct their examinations between June and July 2027. Their proposed result-release dates were not specified in the communiqué.
Registration dates for the examinations are also yet to be announced, with the document stating that further details would be communicated later.
Beyond scheduling, the meeting introduced a compliance requirement for schools accredited as examination centres. Such schools must ensure that at least 75 per cent of their teachers are licensed by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) by December 11, 2026.
The communiqué stated that compliance would be verified and details of schools that meet the requirement uploaded to a designated registration portal.
Schools that fail to meet the threshold will not be approved to serve as examination centres for any of the examinations covered by the arrangement.
The communiqué was signed by Dr Bukola Dosunmu, coordinator of the Federal Ministry of Education–Government Private Sector Working Group.
The proposed harmonisation is intended to improve coordination among examination bodies and reduce scheduling conflicts. However, the examination dates, registration windows and implementation details remain subject to further communication by the relevant authorities.
For candidates preparing for university admission in 2027, the proposed timetable provides an early indication of the examination calendar, but students and schools should await official confirmation from JAMB, NECO and WAEC before making final plans.
