The National Universities Commission (NUC) has assessed two newly introduced academic programmes at Lagos State University (LASU) to evaluate their readiness to meet national standards for university education.
The resource assessment, conducted on Tuesday, October 13, covered the B.Sc. Statistics programme in the Faculty of Science and B.Sc. Education in Human Kinetics (Sports Management) in the Faculty of Education.
The exercise opened with a meeting at the Senate Chamber of the Babatunde Raji Fashola Senate Building on LASU’s main campus in Ojo, Lagos.
The university’s delegation was led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Taiwo Afisi, who represented the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olawunmi Badejo. Other principal officers present included the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Oluwatoyin Enikuomehin; Registrar, Emmanuel Fanu; Bursar, Olabisi Yusuf; and University Librarian, Dr Omawunmi Makinde.
Speaking on behalf of the vice-chancellor, Afisi described resource assessment as an important part of the quality assurance process, enabling universities to evaluate their academic programmes against the NUC’s requirements and identify areas for improvement.
He reaffirmed LASU’s commitment to maintaining academic standards and assured the assessment teams of the cooperation of the relevant faculties and departments throughout the exercise.
The NUC assessment teams were led by Professor Pauline Ekuri and Professor Mohammed Bello. They commended the university for its cooperation and said the exercise would be conducted professionally and thoroughly.
At the exit meeting, the assessors presented their observations and findings on the two programmes, highlighting areas requiring attention where applicable. The feedback is expected to guide any necessary improvements as LASU works towards ensuring that the programmes satisfy the commission’s requirements.
Other university officials involved in the exercise included the Director of Academic Planning, Professor Rasheed Sanni; Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor Anthony Ojekale; Dean of the Faculty of Education, Professor Raimi Moronfolu; and Professor Moses Akanbi.
The assessment is part of the NUC’s quality assurance process for academic programmes in Nigerian universities. LASU’s announcement did not indicate whether the exercise had resulted in final accreditation approval for either programme.
