Barakat Jummai Banni, an indigene of Ilesha-Baruba in Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State, has graduated with First-Class Honours in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Ilorin, recording a cumulative grade point average of 4.66.

Banni also emerged as the highest-ranked female student in her department, capping an academic journey marked by an early admission setback and sustained improvement.

According to the account of her achievement, she scored 141 in her first Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination. Undeterred, she made another attempt, achieved 242 and subsequently secured admission to UNILORIN.

She began her university studies with a reported first-year grade point average of 3.95 before improving her performance to finish with a First-Class degree.

Banni, daughter of the Jarma of Ilesha-Baruba, Alhaji Adamu Sabi Banni, reportedly completed her studies without external scholarship support despite financial challenges.

Beyond her academic work, she served as Vice-President of the Biomedical Engineering Department and participated in mentoring, technology advocacy and entrepreneurship.

She hopes to build a career at the intersection of artificial intelligence, robotics and medicine, with an interest in developing technologies that improve healthcare outcomes.

Her early education began at Abdul Aziz Atta Memorial Nursery and Primary School, Ilesha-Baruba, which she attended from 2005 to 2013. She subsequently attended Federal Government Girls’ College, Omu-Aran, from 2013 to 2019, before proceeding to UNILORIN.

Her achievement has attracted commendation from her community and beyond, offering encouragement to young people, particularly girls pursuing careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

For Banni, the First-Class degree marks a significant step towards her ambition of contributing to healthcare innovation in Nigeria and beyond.
